CSUB Escapes No. 8 CSUN in Big West First Round

HENDERSON, Nev. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball controlled the game down to the last final seconds Tuesday against CSUN in the opening round of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big West Championship. The Roadrunners advance in the tournament on to the Quarterfinals with, 63-62, overtime win over the Matadors.

CSUB was led by Jayden Eggleston's game- and career-high tying 29 points. Vanessa Austin had a standout performance tallying a double-double in 26 minutes of action behind 16 points and a game-best 11 rebounds, including the game-winner. Miracle Saxon was just shy of double digit scoring with eight points in the contest.

CSUB got on the scoreboard first from an Eggleston reverse layup. Back-to-back three-pointers would give the `Runners an 8-2 lead. Six minutes in and an 8-0 run lifted Bakersfield to a near double figure lead at the media timeout, 10-2. The Roadrunners outscored the Matadors in the final four minutes ahead, 18-7, at the end of the first.

Eggleston would reach double digits early in the second quarter. Midway through the period CSUB led, 23-17, forcing a timeout from Greg McCall. CSUN had cut a 13-point deficit to just four points with under a minute to go in the first half. Bakersfield would hold off the No. 8 seed into the locker room up six points, 27-21.

CSUN had made it a one possession game, 27-24, out of the break. Bakersfield maintained its lead ahead of the media timeout. Although the Matadors showed signs of claiming the lead the `Runners kept the Matadors at bay, 33-26. CSUN was its closest in score, 33-31, with under two minutes in the third but CSUB would hold on to its two-point gap, 35-33.

CSUN took its first lead of the contest 30 seconds into the fourth period, 36-35. A triple from Saxon following gave the `Runners their two-point edge back. The score would go back and forth plenty more times until tied, 52-52, with one minute left in the game. Neither team would score in the final 60 seconds of the quarter forcing an extra five minutes.

CSUB would have the last say in overtime outscoring the Matadors 11-10 for the, 63-62, win. Austin's spectacular rebound and finish in traffic off one foot would send the women on to the next round of the 2022 Hercules Tires Big West Championship.

The women (5-19, 3-11 Big West) will take on the No. 1 seeded team in Hawai'i Wednesday afternoon in the Dollar Loan Center. Tipoff is set for 12 p.m. PT and will be aired on ESPN+.
