Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Fall in Hard-Fought Battle at Hawai'i

HONOLULU – A late scoring drought blemished an otherwise inspired performance on Saturday night by the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team. The Roadrunners saw a second-half lead slip away late against Hawai'i in the Stan Sheriff Center and CSUB could not close the gap, falling to the Rainbow Warriors, 62-50.

"In the first half, we played with a lot more energy," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "I thought our guys were better defensively, we just can't have that kind of lull in scoring."

CSUB benefited from a well-balanced offensive effort in Honolulu with six different `Runners scoring six points or more in the game. Bakersfield forward Shawn Stith led CSUB with 12 points while sixth-year `Runner Justin Edler-Davis chipped in six points and a game-high eight rebounds.

On the game, CSUB (39 percent) and Hawai'i (40 percent) shot nearly identical clips from the field, but the 'Bows went 7-for-15 from three-point range while Bakersfield made just 1-of-10 from behind the arc.

Hawai'i and Bakersfield battled in a tight first half with neither team leading by more than five at any point. A 7-0 CSUB surge, capped by Antavion Collum's first three-pointer of the season, helped CSUB jump out to a 25-20 advantage with a little under four minutes to play.

UH's hot three-point shooting (5-of-9) helped the 'Bows hang around, but CSUB turned defense into offense to the tune of 11 points in the first half. Stith led all players with 10 points at the break while Travis Henson's electrifying alley-oop dunk from Kaleb Higgins sparked a big momentum swing as Bakersfield took a 30-28 lead into the locker room.

From a 44-44 tie, Hawai'i went on a 7-0 run to claim a 51-44 advantage with less than five minutes on the clock. Bakersfield's late scoring drought, which saw CSUB score just six points over the final 7:52, contributed to the `Runner loss.

With CSUB fouling to stop the clock, the 'Bows closed the game on an 8-2 run on the way to a 62-50 victory. While the final score was not indicative of the tight battled that raged on the island, the `Runners will have to rebound and prepare for their final two home games.

CSUB (7-16, 2-11 Big West) will return to Bakersfield to host UC San Diego on Mar. 3 before celebrating four `Runners on Senior Day, Mar. 5, when UC Irvine comes to town for the regular-season finale.
