`Runners Sweep Pacific, Nearly Upset No. 14 Pepperdine

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On Day 2 of the Barnes Beach Complex `Runner Invite, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team earned a split in a pair of matches. The Roadrunners swept the Pacific Tigers before battling the No. 14-ranked Pepperdine Waves in a narrow, 3-2 defeat.

"Our first weekend was amazing," said Cesar Benatti, CSUB's Head Coach. "We executed our game in the highest level of these last years I've been here. We handled moments of pressure well and we played head-to-head with one of the best teams in the history of collegiate beach volleyball. Now we have to keep our feet on the ground and continue to get better in the basic things that we are focusing on this season. I'm very happy with the way we started and I'm looking forward to keep improving."

On the day, Bakersfield's No. 3 pair of Paige Calvin and Hayley McCluskey and No. 4 pair of Anna Unke and Brooke Boiseau went 2-0. Both `Runner pairs battled their ranked counterparts from Pepperdine to three sets, picking up victories on the way to a 3-0 start to the season.

CSUB's No. 1 pairing of Milica Vukobrat and Cameron Solberg finished the weekend 2-1, nearly going undefeated as well. In their only loss at the `Runner Invite, Vukobrat and Solberg pushed Pepperdine's top pair to the brink on Saturday (27-29, 21-15, 10-15).

Bakersfield (2-1) was originally scheduled to compete in a tournament in Santa Cruz, Calif. next weekend, but with that event being canceled earlier this week, the `Runners added a home doubleheader against CSUN in its place. The `Runners and Matadors will go toe-to-toe on Friday, Mar. 4, in a pair of games in Bakersfield. First serve on Friday is scheduled for 11 a.m. (PT).
