`Runners Fall to Big West Leader Hawai'i

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball saw Big West Conference leader Hawai'i for the third time this season Thursday evening. Shots didn't fall as intended for the Roadrunners who had a two-game win streak snapped by the Rainbow Wahine, 75-61.

CSUB had a pair in double figures behind a team-high 17 points from Vanessa Austin. She collected seven boards matching UH's team-best on the glass. Jayden Eggleston tallied her ninth career double-double finishing with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Bakersfield hung tough with Hawai'i in the first quarter tying the game, 6-6, four minutes in. UH led by a basket midway through the period before the `Runners tied the score again, 8-8, out of the media timeout. The Rainbow Wahine would start to pull away late in the period outscoring CSUB 12-4 in the final minutes to lead at the end of the first, 20-12.

The Roadrunners struggled to make shots in the second period going 2-of-14 (14.3%) in the quarter. UH, on the other hand, remained consistent from the field making six of their eleven attempts taken. Hawai'i would limit the `Runners to seven points and add 15 to take a, 35-19, lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

CSUB began to find their way in the third as UH remained hot shooting over 50 percent (53.3%) in the period. The Roadrunners were barely edged, 19-16, but the damage from the first half kept the deficit in double figures as the Rainbow Wahine led, 54-35, ahead of the final period.

Bakersfield saved its best basketball for last taking the fourth quarter, 26-21. CSUB was near perfect from the free throw line (11-of-12) and produced its best percentage in field goals (41.2%). The Roadrunners would outplay UH in the second half but fall in the end, 75-61.

The women (4-17, 3-9 Big West) will hit the road next week for their final two Big West regular season games. First up on Thursday is UC San Diego, who escaped the Roadrunners at home, 64-59. UC Irvine, another formidable opponent near the top of conference standings, will be the `Runners final stop next Saturday.
