CSUB Go Back on 3-Game Road Trip Starting at Pepperdine

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In their Sunday home opener against Omaha, the Roadrunners used a massive third quarter to squeak out a 69-68 overtime win over the Mavericks. With just nine seconds to play in overtime, Sophia Tougas dropped a breathtaking three-point bucket from the corner to give the `Runners a much deserved win after their last tough loss against UNLV and two weeks of rest due to their original home opener against Fresno Pacific being canceled. CSUB now heads back out onto the road for another three-game road stint where the first opponent will be Pepperdine on Wednesday, followed by a trip to the state's capital to take on Sacramento State later this weekend.

Upcoming Schedule
  • At Pepperdine, Wednesday, Dec. 7, 7 p.m.
  • At Sacramento State, Saturday, Dec. 10, 1 p.m.
  • At UCLA, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2 p.m.
`Runner Notes
  • Freshman walk-on Nseije Ortiz made the first start of her young career, and Taylor Caldwell made her much-anticipated season debut while putting up 15 points in 31 minutes off the bench.
  • Despite being short handed against Omaha, missing a few key players, the `Runners still put up a valiant effort in a game that originally looked to be a runaway for the Mavericks after a lopsided first half.
  • Down 30-22 at halftime, CSUB had 18 turnovers that were heavily taken advantage of by the Mavericks, who turned those into 22 of their 30 first-half points. Including OT, the `Runners regained control and had only 7 turnovers in the final three periods of the game.
  • The `Runners scored 26 points, more than their entire first half total, in a massive third quarter that saw CSUB not only get back in the game but lead on points.
  • Tougas led the way with 17 points, including the downtown shot that sealed the game, while Kayla Morris put up 13 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
Scouting the Waves
  • Pepperdine (6-3) is led by fourth-year Head Coach Kristen Dowling.
  • In their last game against Portland State, the Waves held on to win 65-59, fending off an attempted fourth quarter comeback by the Vikings.
  • Pepperdine had three players in the game with double-digit points, and two of them scored 15 or more. Theresa Grace Mbanefo shot 8-of-14 from the field, dropping 19 points, while Meaali'i Amosa also contributed a game-leading 11 rebounds.
  • CSUB is searching for their first win since 2015 against Pepperdine. This will be the third straight year that the two teams face off. Their last matchup together ended up in a 52-42 Waves win in Bakersfield on Nov. 30, 2021.
Scouting the Hornets
  • Sacramento State (6-1) is led by second-year Head Coach Mark Campbell.
  • Before they play CSUB, the Hornets first play San Diego State on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
  • The Hornets boast a strong team this year, having beaten Fresno State 62-61 last time out.
  • Sacramento State's two primary offensive leaders on the year, Isnelle Natabou and Kahlaijah Dean, provided a dual-headed performance against the Bulldogs that saw 16 points from each of them, including a double-double for Natabou with 11 rebounds as well.
  • This is the second year in a row that CSUB will play Sacramento State after a nine year break in the series. Last year, CSUB fell to the Hornets in Bakersfield, 50-60.
