Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Written by James Tsitakis-Cecil

McGhee's Career Night Not Enough To Hold Off Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – The Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team traveled across the country to the east coast for a matchup against Dartmouth College. The game started off as a back-and-forth contest with even play on both sides. However, a few long runs at the end of the first half and throughout the entire second half saw Dartmouth take large leads over the Roadrunners. In the end, CSUB could not hold off a well-balanced Dartmouth offense, falling 54-79. Still, despite a tough loss, Marvin McGhee's career night with a game-leading 20 points on 8-of-13 from the field represented the bulk of CSUB's scoring.

Notables
  • Marvin McGhee had already passed a career high for points by the end of the first half and kept the `Runners in the game despite being down by twelve points at halftime. He ended up with 20 total points.
  • Dartmouth found some gaps in a normally stout CSUB defense, as the `Runners could not find a way to limit the Big Green from shooting long distance. A big part of the Dartmouth lead came from converting 44.8% on three-point attempts.
  • The `Runners could not stop Dartmouth from lengthening the lead a few more times despite cutting the deficit at some points. CSUB gave up a season-high 79 points to the Big Green offense.
  • Dartmouth scored 21 of its points off 16 Bakersfield turnovers, which is uncharacteristic of a normally disciplined and stingy defense.

First Half
  • From the start, it was a very back-and-forth game. Bakersfield came out and hit over 45% of its shots early, and kept the game close the entire time before finally taking its first lead about midway through the half.
  • The `Runners were doing a good job keeping their opponent out of the paint, but Dartmouth's perimeter shooting was on-target, as 15 of the Big Green's first 20 points were from beyond the three-point line.
  • Sophomore Marvin McGhee had a breakout game starting in the first half. Before the final media timeout, McGhee had already overtaken his career-high in points, keeping CSUB in the game with a perfect 3-of-3 from downtown.
  • Dartmouth pulled ahead right before the half with a 15-point unanswered run. The Big Green led the `Runners 40-28 at halftime.
Second Half
  • Dartmouth started off at the same pace as the first half ended with, extending its lead over CSUB 59-41 midway through the second half.
  • The `Runners began to make Dartmouth feel uneasy about its lead, coming within striking distance a few times through the middle of the half.
  • Dartmouth took its largest lead of the night within the last five minutes of the game. A 18-6 run helped the Big Green close out the game and secure a 79-54 victory over the `Runners.
