Bakersfield Holds Off UCR for Double Overtime Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Fourty minutes was not enough in Thursday night's Big West opener between Cal State Bakersfield and visiting UC Riverside. The Roadrunners and Highlanders played through double overtime with CSUB narrowly edging UCR, 56-53, after a defensive battle and ten lead changes.

Notables
  • Bakersfield's defense showed up to the tune of a CSUB Division I single-game record 12 blocks. Redshirt freshman Kayla Morris led the team with four blocks, but six different `Runners tallied at least one block on the night.
  • This game was CSUB's first double overtime game since the 2017-18 season when the `Runners fell to Grand Canyon, which was coached by the same Nicole Powell who coached UCR on Thursday.
  • The `Runners were led by senior guard Taylor Caldwell, who posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in a game-high 45 minutes. Caldwell transferred to CSUB after four seasons at GCU, where she was previously coached by Powell.
  • Sophomore Hennie van Schaik heated up early and finished the game with a team-high 13 points to go with seven boards and two blocks.
  • Morris, a redshirt freshman, added four points and three rebounds to her career-high four blocks.
  • Riverside outrebounded CSUB 58-45, but Bakersfield held its visitors to just 23 percent shooting on the game and 20 percent from three-point range.
Quotes
  • "I knew going into this game, and I was telling our players all week long, we're going to have to be really really physical in the Big West…Sometimes, it's going to come down to breaking plays, gutsy performances, rebounds, taking charges, making free throws. That's what it's going to take for us to grind out wins in this conference." – Head Coach Greg McCall
  • "We just had to keep our composure. We had a few players foul out and some other players stepped up. It's just all about battling through." – Taylor Caldwell
  • "Lately, in practice, I have been feeling like my shot was a little off, but my coaches and teammates were telling me to keep shooting and that's what I did." – Hennie van Schaik
  • "I knew I had a lot of fouls down the stretch, just playing honest defense. They were very aggressive bigs, so just keeping my hands up and moving my feet." – Kayla Morris
