Women's Basketball Hosts Pacific Before Holiday Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team will host a home game for the first time in over two weeks, this time against University of the Pacific, for the team's final matchup before breaking for the Christmas holiday. Previously, the Roadrunners dropped their last three away games despite some impressive individual performances. At UCLA, Bakersfield was bested in a back-and-forth contest against the No. 10 team in the country. All things considered, coach McCall has confidence in his players going into Big West play next week.

This Week's Schedule
  • vs Pacific, Thursday, Dec. 22, 1 p.m.
`Runner Notes
  • Sophia Tougas and Soli Herrera are still on their streaks of starting every game thus far, while Tougas has played the role of CSUB's best shooter (9.0 ppg, 45.2% 3fg) with Hennie van Schaik having been out for a few weeks.
  • In the 75-47 loss against UCLA, the `Runners started slowly, allowing the Bruins to take control in the first and third quarters, but the bright side of the game could be seen in CSUB's response in the second and fourth quarters. While Bakersfield was outscored in the first quarters of each half by a total of 39-15, the `Runners nearly matched UCLA in the latter quarters of the halves, behind just 36-32.
  • The game against Pacific will not only be CSUB's first home game in two weeks, but it also represents a chance to get back on track before Big West conference play begins later this month. Head Coach Greg McCall has spoken time and time again about his confidence in the CSUB women to overcome the adversity of injury and losing, leading to a successful season.
  • CSUB currently has two players within the top-50 in NCAA Division I statistics. Kayla Morris currently stands at 22nd in blocks-per-game, while Sophia Tougas ranks 48th in three-point percentage.
Scouting the Tigers
  • Pacific (5-6) is led by eighth-year Head Coach Bradley Davis.
  • The Tigers last played host to St. Mary's in an overtime thriller loss that saw the Gaels take a small first half lead before losing the third quarter by a large margin and still come back to tie it up before winning in overtime.
  • Pacific's sophomore guard Anaya James, who is the team's leading scorer on the season with 15.0 ppg, was close to posting a triple-double against St. Mary's with 13 pts, 9 ast, and 8 reb.
  • Last year's matchup between CSUB and Pacific ended with a 78-65 Tigers' win. While Anaya James also led that game with a double-double, the `Runners came relatively close to pulling off a massive comeback after turning a 19-42 first half into a 46-36 second half.
