Women's Basketball Gets Set to Meet #10 UCLA

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Following losses against two strong teams away from home at Pepperdine and Sacramento State, the Cal State Bakersfield women's basketball team will finish its three-game road stint against a tough tenth-ranked UCLA. Despite the team's injuries and an admittedly difficult matchup, coach McCall remains confident in his student-athletes as the Roadrunners will be looking to right the ship with an upset in the City of Angels.

This Week's Schedule
  • at UCLA, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2 p.m.
Quotes from Head Coach Greg McCall
  • "We have a lot of injuries. Hennie van Schaik, our lead scorer, is out for a few weeks, Shaunae Brown, and Taylor Caldwell went down last game with an ankle injury, same with Sage Bridges-Bey, and all of these are ankle or leg injuries."
  • "We went down to Pepperdine and Sacramento State, and we were missing our four-spot. Where we are usually big, with players that are 6-4, but we have to drop down to players that are 5-10 or 5-11 and have been experimenting putting Sophia [Tougas] in that spot to try and still get some production there."
  • "Believe it or not, I make sure to remind our girls every day that the other teams don't care if you have injuries. We always go and compete regardless of our injuries. We're going to put together a great game plan, so if we can sustain that plan, get stops on them, and have the ball bounce our way a few times, you never know what might happen. I know we're not fully healthy, but we are going there to win the game."
`Runner Notes
  • Despite their best efforts, the `Runners were unable to overcome some key injuries to win either of their games last week against Pepperdine and Sacramento State. Regardless of the outcomes, the team remained resilient and fought hard to stay in both of the games.
  • Against Pepperdine, Simone Johnson stepped up for some of CSUB's unavailable scorers, tallying career-highs of 10 points and 12 rebounds in her first double-double. Johnson also played all but three minutes of the entire game, providing some lineup consistency on the court.
  • Grace Hunter and Soli Herrera also posted season-highs against Sacramento State, while Herrera and Sophia Tougas both extended their streaks of starting consecutive games.
  • Kayla Morris continued to be a bright spot for the `Runner defense, as she currently leads CSUB with 14 blocks and currently ranks 16th in the country for blocks-per-game.
Scouting the Bruins
  • UCLA (9-1) is led by 12th-year Head Coach Cori Close.
  • The Bruins were able to hold off their crosstown rival Trojans 59-56 despite a resurgent second-half comeback attempt by USC.
  • UCLA leaned on its starters for the bulk of its offense in the game, with three of them putting up double-digit points including a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds by senior guard Charisma Osborne.
