`Runners Can't Slow Visiting Tritons

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Playing the first of two final home games to close out the 2022 season, the Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell against UC San Diego, 3-1, on Friday night. The Roadrunners rallied to win Set 2, came up just short in a 30-28, third-set loss, and could not hold off the visiting Tritons in the Icardo Center.

Set 1 (UCSD, 25-13) 
  • The Tritons jumped out to a 12-5 advantage and never looked back, surging to its biggest lead on set point.
  • UCSD hit .333 in the opening game while the `Runners managed just a .054 clip.
Set 2 (CSUB, 25-22) 
  • After starting out behind in Set 2, the `Runners used an 11-4 run to take a 19-18 lead.
  • Tied a 22-22, a kill by Palm and back-to-back kills from freshman Lizzie Binder sealed the deal for Bakersfield.
Set 3 (UCSD, 30-28) 
  • The third set featured 12 tied scores and six lead changes.
  • CSUB earned set point at 24-23, but UCSD fended off that chance as well as another before earning a set-point opportunity of its own at 26-25.
  • The `Runners staved off that set point and earned another of their own, but the Tritons rattled off three-straight points to win the marathon set, 30-28.
Set 4 (UCSD, 25-17) 
  • UCSD carried its momentum from narrowly winning Set 3 right into the fourth set, jumping out to a 10-5 advantage early on.
  • Bakersfield could not slow the Triton offense as the visitors cruised to a comfortable win, sealing the match.
