Kancleris' Career Game Leads CSUB Past Corpus Christi

EL PASO, Texas – Taking on a 2022 NCAA Tournament team to kick off the Jim Forbes Classic, the Cal State Bakersfield men's basketball team bested the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Tuesday afternoon. The Roadrunners enjoyed a well-balanced offense, a stout defense, and a career game from forward Modestas Kancleris in the 73-63 victory.

Notables
  • Kancleris, a transfer from Creighton, posted a double-double with a career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds while adding five assists and four blocks.
  • Four other `Runners recorded double-digit scoring efforts, including 12 points and a career-high seven assists from point guard Kaleb Higgins.
  • Ivan Reynolds chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, and four steals in the victory.
  • CSUB shot 53 percent from the field on Tuesday while holding Corpus Christi to just 32 percent shooting.

First Half
  • CSUB's smothering defense limited Corpus Christi to just two points in the first nine minutes while holding the Islanders to 0-for-15 shooting.
  • Bakersfield started the game going 7-for-15 from three-point range including a trio of three-point baskets from freshman Cedquavious Hunter.
  • A 14-0 run put Bakersfield ahead of Corpus Christi, 25-8, with five minutes remaining in the half.         
  • Antavion Collum and Hunter led all scorers at the break with nine points each while Kancleris tallied seven points and seven rebounds.
  • The `Runners held the Islanders to just 23 percent shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Second Half
  • Bakersfield maintained a steady lead most of the second half, but with three minutes to play, the Islanders cut their deficit to single digits.
  • CSUB struggled to hit free throws, going 4-for-14 from the charity stripe, as Corpus Christi slowly chipped away.
  • The Islanders pulled within four points, 67-63, with 1:03 on the clock, but a pair of Higgins free throws followed by a Reynolds steal and fastbreak dunk sealed the victory.
