`Runners Kick Off Road Trip with 4-Set Win in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A late explosion from freshman Naomi Chankoumi and several career-high performances from the Roadrunners pushed Cal State Bakersfield past UC Riverside on Thursday Night. CSUB sprinted ahead of the host Highlanders with a 25-13 first-set win, then held on for a 3-1 victory, outlasting UCR 31-29 in the fourth and final set.

Quotes from Head Coach Giovana Melo
  • "I think we played a very solid first set, in every aspect, that didn't allow UCR to perform at their potential. Then I think they stepped up and we had to respond."
  • "Our serve and pass broke down a bit, which put us in hard situations, but we were able to battle through."
  • "Naomi has been getting more comfortable within our system and, consequently, getting more confident within her game. That is allowing her to perform well for us."
Notables
  • UCR fended off seven match-point opportunities in the fourth set, but the `Runners finally sealed the deal with Chankoumi tallying kills on the final two rallies.
