89th-Minute Strike Lifts Cal Poly Past Bakersfield

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Playing in their final collegiate match, four Roadrunners seniors provided outstanding performances in Cal State Bakersfield's season finale at Cal Poly on Saturday night. Most notably, Juan Pablo Alvarez was a dangerous playmaker and Carlos Armendariz scored a pair of goals for CSUB, but it was not enough as an 89th-minute goal pushed the Mustangs past the `Runners, 3-2.

Quotes from Head Coach Richie Grant
  • "It was a big effort from our program tonight and we played well enough to earn something from the match."
  • "We send our seniors off with our full appreciation and with fond memories of their time dedicated to our program and university."
Notables
  • Armendariz, a native of San Francisco, Calif., wrapped up his collegiate career with a bang, posting his first multi-goal performance since the 2019 season.
  • Alvarez and freshman Nathan Jimenez earned an assist each in San Luis Obispo.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Damian earned his first start of the season and posted three saves on the evening.
  • Cal Poly's game-winning goal at 88:06 was the second of the night from Jalen Atkinson, who also added an assist off the bench for the Mustangs.
Season Wrap Up
  • While the `Runners at times struggled to find their offensive rhythm, CSUB's defense held strong. Bakersfield allowed opponents just a total of 28 goals this season, tied for fifth-best in CSUB's history and the fewest since 2014.
  • Armendariz's brace cemented the senior as Bakersfield's leader in goals (5) and points (11).
  • The `Runner goalkeepers combined to allow just a 1.65 goals against average all year, led by Filippo Dadone, who started 16 of 17 matches.
First Half
  • Armendariz gave the `Runners their first lead of the night at 28:00 when he buried a one-time wonder-strike on a centered ball from Jimenez.
  • Just over two minutes later, Cal Poly answered back to tie the score at 1-1.
  • In the 39th minute, Shammai Camara's diving header went just wide of the goal and the teams went to halftime tied.
Second Half
  • Just under two minutes into the second period, Cal Poly took its first lead of the night on Atkinson's first goal.
  • Less than two minutes later, Alvarez's corner kick found the head of Armendariz, who completed his brace to tie the score at 2-2.
  • Both teams had some close chances late in the match, but a Cal Poly counter turned into the game-winning at 88:06 on Atkinson's second goal.
