Sizemore Scores Late, but Season Ends for Youthful Roadrunners

Fullerton – Chloe Sizemore scored late in the second half to pull California State University, Bakersfield within a goal, but Cal State Fullerton held on for a 2-1 win, Thursday night at Titan Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Roadrunners were eliminated from post-season contention on the final day of Big West women's soccer competition.

CSUB finished a strong bounce back season with a 4-8-6 overall record and a 2-3-5 league mark, earning points in ten of eighteen contests during the 2022 season, twice as many as they did during the 2021 campaign. The 'Runners also scored 12 more goals this season, while slashing goals against by double figures.

"I'm extremely proud of this group and everything they did and sacrificed to move our program forward," said Head Coach Sebastian Vecchio. "This was an extremely talented and young team that set new heights and expectations for the program. We had a fantastic year that we will now look to build upon, allowing us to play our part in making the Big West an even stronger conference."

"Finally, I want to thank all our seniors for their contributions to CSUB Women's Soccer. This season would not have been possible without each of them."

First Half…
* After CSUB opened the game with a strong forward push, the Titans Hailey Gough scored against the run of play when she got her foot on a long shot by teammate Karla Rodriguez and sent a deflection past a diving Hollee Hercik in the 22nd minute.
* Cal State Fullerton made it 2-0 just three minutes later when Rodriguez' corner kick attempt was collected and slotted home by Samantha McKenna.

Second Half…
* Captain and central defender Chloe Sizemore pulled the Roadrunners within one in the 76th minute when she headed home the first goal of her CSUB career, following a perfect cross from Anela Nigito. Jette Zimmer started the play with a free kick across the 18-yard box.
* Zimmer nearly tied the game with two minutes to play when she cut to the middle and fired a right-footed shot just wide of the right goalpost.

Notable…
* The two team's combined for 41 shot attempts and 19 shots on goal, Fullerton finished with a 13-6 margin in attempts on target and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
* Goalkeeper Hollee Hercik made a career-high 11 saves against the Titans, surpassing her own personal best of nine set earlier this season in a win over Northern Arizona. Hercik's 11 stops give her 88 for the season, enough to slot her in at #10 all-time on CSUB's Career Saves list.
* Anela Nigito's second-half helper was her second assist of the season to go with two goals, capping her freshman season with six total points.
* Tonight's contest was the final game in Bakersfield Blue & Gold for six seniors: Rhyan Acosta, Jasmine Bowman, Kaylee Covert, Devan Furukawa, Angelica Hurtado and Chloe Sizemore. Twenty-three CSUB letterwinners are eligible to return next season, including nine of tonight's 11 starters and 13 of 16 players to compete against CSUF.
* The youthful Roadrunners earned a result in nine of their final 12 games of the season, after opening the year 1-4-0.
