'Runners Chasing Playoff Spot in Season Finale at Fullerton

Bakersfield – The California State University, Bakersfield women's soccer team travels to Cal State Fullerton, Thursday night at 7 p.m., in hot pursuit of the sixth and final playoff berth in the Big West Post-Season Tournament. The Roadrunners are presently tied for seventh in the conference standings, alongside UC Irvine and one point behind sixth-place Hawai'i with one game remaining in regular season play. CSUB's best hope for advancing to the post-season requires a draw between the Anteaters and Rainbow Wahine in Irvine, and a win over a Fullerton team that has already clinched its spot in the post-season. The 'Runners would be eliminated with a Hawai'i win, but can still advance if UCI is victorious, assuming they can shift the goal-differential tiebreaker in their favor.

CSUB is 1-1-5 in its last seven contests, dating back to Sept. 25. A tie won't do the trick against a Titans team that the 'Runners have never beaten; CSUF holds a 2-0-1 advantage in the limited all-time series between the two schools, though Bakersfield did win a 2008 exhibition contest at The Main Soccer Field, 2-1.

THIS WEEK...
at Cal State Fullerton (Saturday, Oct. 29 - 7:00 PM)  |  Fullerton, Calif.  |  Watch  |  Live Stats

ROADRUNNER QUICK STRIKES...
* Bakersfield's draw with UC San Diego was the team's sixth tie of the season, setting a new single-season program record. CSUB's previous season-high was five, set during the 2004 campaign under then head coach Simon Tobin. The 'Runners finished 2-13-5 that season. Bakersfield has drawn in its last two contests, and in four of its last five outings.

* Bakersfield scored its 20th goal in a 1-1 draw with Hawai'i in the team's 16th game of the 2022 season, after managing just 10 goals in 19 contests a year ago. After notching a pair against UCSD, CSUB sits on 22 goals heading into their regular season finale.

* After beginning their Big West tenure 0-7-1, the 'Runners won their final two games of the 2021 conference campaign. Through nine games this season Bakersfield is 2-2-5, which adds up to a 4-2-5 record in the team's last eleven conference games dating back to Oct. 28, 2021.

* Senior forward Kaylee Covert had a career night for the Roadrunners in her final appearance at The Main Soccer Field. Covert picked up her third assist of the season in the 41st minute when she set up classmate Rhyan Acosta, before notching the first goal of her Bakersfield career ten minutes later with a 20-yard blast high over the outstretched arms of UC San Diego's goalkeeper. Covert now boasts a goal and two assists in CSUB's last two outings.

* Rhyan Acosta's goal was her second in three games. The Bakersfield native also scored in CSUB's loss at UC Davis on Oct. 13, and now boasts a perfect shooting percentage this season, scoring on her only two shots attempted. The graduate of Bakersfield College and Liberty High School has appeared in all 17 games this season for the 'Runners.

* Roadrunner goalkeeper Hollee Hercik has been outstanding all season long, racking up save after save as CSUB's last line of defense. Hercik boasts 77 stops on the year and, despite playing her first season in Bakersfield, needs just six more saves to move into the Career Top-10 in program history. Nicole Jennings (1996-99) currently sits 10th on the 'Runners All-Time list with 83 saves in her time on campus. Hercik has made at least six saves on five occasions this season, including a season-high nine in a win over Northern Arizona.

* Three of CSUB's top-four scorers are either freshmen (Kalea Eichenberger & Jette Zimmer) or sophomores (Karen Flores) this season, boding well for both present and future seasons on the pitch in Bakersfield. Eichenberger leads the club in both goals (4) and points (10), while Zimmer and Flores each boast 3-2-5 scoring lines. Junior Regielly Halldorsdottir is the elder statesman of the Roadrunner attack and ranks second on the team with nine total points on three goals and three assists. The quartet has combined for 101 of the team's 169 shots attempted this season. Zimmer and Halldorsdottir each have one game-winning goal on the season, tying them for first on the team with two more impact freshman; Anela Nigito and Catalina Roggerone, who both have one game-winning strike among their two goals each.

* Bakersfield freshman Anela Nigito and Catalina Roggerone recently returned to CSUB after a call up to represent their country on Argentina's U-20 National Team. Roggerone served as the team's captain during the national team window.

* Defender Anela Nigito immediately made her presence felt. Nigito struck for her second goal of the season late in the first half to pull CSUB even and eventually force a tie with the Rainbow Wahine.

UP NEXT...
* Should Bakersfield win and advance to The Big West Tournament, the 'Runners would travel to the #4 seed on Oct. 30 for a quarterfinal round match-up. That would mean either a trip to UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara or a return date with Cal State Fullerton three days from now, with kick-off time yet to be determined.
