Men's Soccer Travels to UCI, Hosts UCR on Senior Night

Bakersfield - The California State University, Bakersfield Men's Soccer kicks off the penultimate week of the regular season with a trip to UC Irvine on Wednesday, Oct. 19, before returning to The Main Soccer Field for the program's Senior Night Celebration on Saturday, Oct. 22 against UC Riverside. Both games are set to begin at 7:00 p.m., with full coverage of live stats on GoRunners.com and a video stream available on ESPNPlus. The Roadrunners will look to make one final push to steal a spot in the Big West Tournament this season, after reaching post-season play in six of the last seven seasons. 

The Anteaters sit in a three-way tie for seventh in the Big West standings, while UC Riverside is tied with CSUN for fourth-place and looking to hang on to host a first-round match up. Saturday's senior ceremony will honor standouts Carlos Armendariz, Harry Downing, Stephon Marcano and JP Alvarez. The quartet has combined to make 158 career appearances in Bakersfield Blue & Gold over the course of their careers.

ROADRUNNER QUICK STRIKES...

* One goal has made all the difference for Bakersfield in 2022 - whether for or against. The Roadrunners are now 2-6-2 in games decided by one goal or less this season. CSUB has allowed more than two goals on only two occasions this season, but have managed just three goals in their last ten outings.

* Roadrunner goalkeeper Filippo Dadone needs 16 more stops to move into Bakersfield's Single-Season Top-10 in saves. The native of Cuneo, Italy, has turned aside 49 of the 70 shots he's faced this season. Matt Touchstone is currently 10th all-time with 65 saves in 1995.

* CSUB will honor four seniors ahead of Saturday's contest with UC Riverside at The Main Soccer Field. Captains Carlos Armendariz and Harry Downing, along with defender Stephon Marcano and midfielder JP Alvarez are all expected to make their final appearances in front of the home crowd.

* Carlos Armendariz has become a mainstay in the Roadrunner starting line-up over the last three seasons. The senior from San Francisco, Calif., will make his 50th-consecutive start at UC Irvine October 19. Armendariz leads the 2022 team in scoring with two goals and one assist for five points and boasts 10 career goals and 22 career points. He was a 2019 All-WAC Honorable Mention choice and a 2021 Big West Second-Team honoree.

* Defender Harry Downing has seen action in 47 contests for the 'Runners over his time in Bakersfield, making 46 starts. Downing will hit 50 appearances if he gets into each of the final three CSUB games this season. A native of Newquay, England, Downing has two goals and five points to his credit, while anchoring the central defense for the past three seasons.

* Stephon Marcano has started 41 of 45 career games at CSUB, returning from a season-ending injury in 2019 to become a mainstay on the right side for the Roadrunners. Marcano has two career assists, after spending most of his career at right back. A native of Santa Cruz, Trinidad and Tobago, Marcano represented the country on the Senior National Team last summer for friendlies in Boliva and Belize.

* A transfer from Santa Barbara City College, JP Alvarez lost his junior season to an ACL tear, but has returned to start all 14 games as a defensive midfielder this season. Alvarez has played more than 1,000 minutes in 2022, registering one assist and serving as a key link between the back line and the attack. Over the summer, Alvarez played for the Ventura County Fusion, leading the team to a USL2 National Championship.

* Freshman forward Atli Stefansson scored the first goal of his career in Bakersfield's loss at UC Davis on Oct. 12. Stefansson followed up his strike with the first start of his CSUB career three days later against CSUN on Viva Los 'Runner's night. Stefansson is the fourth Roadrunner to score his first career goal this season, joining Andres Perez De Gracia, Jacob Fitzgerald and Shammai Camara.

* The 'Runners have advanced to conference tournaments in  each of head coach Richie Grant's seven seasons in Bakersfield. Last season, CSUB placed fourth in the  Big West - after being picked to finish dead last - and hosted a quarterfinal contest with UC Davis at The Main Soccer Field. This season, CSUB was picked to place 8th in the 10-team league.

* Five different Roadrunners have capped internationally at the youth or senior* level. Danian Alguera (USA & El Salvador), Stephon Marcano (Trinidad & Tobago*), Scott Pengelly (Northern Ireland), all boast international caps, while Carlos Armendariz and Adrian Medina have each represented the United States at the Senior National Level in Futsal. Marcano dressed for a pair of T&T friendlies this past summer, at Boliva and at Belize.

* Ten Roadrunners prepped for the college game by representing and competing with professional youth academies - including Damian Alguera (Philadelphia Union, Sporting KC, SJ Earthquakes), Filippo Dadone (Juventus Academy), Harry Downing (Plymouth Argyle FC), Kevin Estrada (San Francisco Glens), Bryson Hankins (Seattle Sounders FC), Sucre Herrera (Sacramento Republic FC), Nathan Jimenez (Sacramento Republic FC), Adrian Medina (San Francisco Glens), Scott Pengelly (Fleetwood Town FC) and Andres Perez de Gracia (Crystal Palace FC & Derby County FC).

Bakersfield will close out the regular season with one final road game, heading to the coast to take on rival Cal Poly on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. The Roadrunners dropped a 2-0 decision to the Mustangs at The Main Soccer Field in last season's finale.
