Calvin Earns Big West Defensive Honor, CSUB Preps for League Leaders

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After a slow start to Big West play, the Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team now has momentum rolling in its favor. Fresh off of back-to-back sweeps this past weekend, the Roadrunners have already begun preparing for a quick turnaround to a Tuesday-night matchup with Cal Poly before a Friday-night clash with Big West leader Hawai'i.
Adding to the excitement of recent success, the `Runners learned on Monday afternoon that senior libero Paige Calvin earned Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors after a standout weekend on the back row.

This Week's Schedule
  • vs. Cal Poly, Tuesday, Oct. 11, 6 p.m. (PT)
    • Pink Night – Wear pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
  • vs. Hawai'i, Friday, Oct. 14, 6 p.m. (PT)
`Runner Notes
  • Bakersfield handed 3-0 sweeps to both UC Davis and UC Riverside in the Icardo Center this past weekend.
  • Calvin's defensive efforts were a major catalyst to CSUB's success. The libero averaged 4.67 digs per set while also tallying seven aces and ten assists over two matches.
  • This is the second Big West Defensive Player of the Week honor in Calvin's career.
  • The `Runners outlasted UC Riverside 34-32 in the final set of Saturday's match. The 34 points is the second-most scored by Bakersfield in a set since volleyball moved to 25-point sets in 2007. CSUB defeated Utah Valley 36-34 in Set 3 of a matchup back in 2008.
Scouting the Mustangs
  • Cal Poly (8-8, 5-1 Big West) has won seven of its last eight matches.
  • The Mustangs also swept Davis and Riverside last weekend.
  • Cal Poly has two of the top hitters in The Big West in Tommi Stockham and Maia Dvoracek.
  • The Mustangs lead the all-time series against the `Runners, 7-2.
  • Last year, the two teams split a pair of Big West matchups with both teams winning at home.
Scouting the Rainbow Wahine
  • Hawai'i (9-5, 6-0 Big West) is the only remaining undefeated team in the Big West, leading Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara by one game.
  • Last weekend, the Rainbow Wahine swept UC Irvine at home before holding off UC San Diego in four sets.
  • Much like Cal Poly, Hawai'i has a pair of standout hitters in Amber Igiede and Riley Wagoner.
  • CSUB and Hawai'i have met just four times in the all-time series with the Rainbow Wahine owning a 4-0 record.
  • In 2021, Hawai'i won both matches against CSUB, but the `Runners took a set from the Rainbow Wahine in Bakersfield.
