Vecchio Signs Murguia, Fortun for Fall 2022

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield head women's soccer coach Sebastian Vecchio announced that the Roadrunners have signed a pair of midfielders in Iliana Murguia (Nipomo, CA) and Mya Fortun (Phoenix, AZ) to National Letters of Intent. Murguia and Fortun signed for next fall joining a larger recruiting class coming in the spring.

"I am excited about both players," said fourth-year head coach Vecchio. "Iliana and Mya bring unique talents to our team."

Iliana Murguia | Midfielder | Nipomo, CA | Nipomo High School
Iliana (E-lee-anna) Murguia (Mur-gee-uh) is a high school tri-sport athlete from the San Jose area at Nipomo competing in soccer, cross country, and track & field for the Titans. Her coaches named her Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons after being recognized in their league as an honorable mention and first team selection.

Murguia has also been an all-league honoree in cross country and track & field while at NHS.
She ran the second fastest 800-meter time in school history in route to a CIF Central section championship title in the event.

"Iliana is a very smart and technical player with a high soccer IQ. She loves the game and has a fantastic team first attitude," said Vecchio when asked about Murguia.

With soccer and track & field seasons left, Iliana still has an opportunity to build on an impressive prep resume. She has helped Nipomo win three Ocean League championships and three Central section championship titles across the three sports she participates in while holding a GPA above 3.5.

Mya Fortun | Midfielder | Phoenix, AZ | Desert Vista High School
Mya Fortun is an out-of-state recruit from Phoenix finishing up her last year at Desert Vista. She has earned recognition in soccer and track & field for the Thunder. In her freshman season, Fortun was named MVP. She helped DVHS make a state playoff run her sophomore year placing third. Fastforward to last season when Fortun's coaches awarded her the Most Goals Scored certificate.

She helped her club team, Arizona Arsenal Teal 03 Girls, win a state championship in 2018 capping her fourth year with Arizona Arsenal ECNL on a high note.

Coach Vecchio said that Mya, "is a versatile player, very athletic, and very competitive." He added, "She can cover a lot of ground in the midfield and has the potential to impact our program right away."

Fortun finished top 25 in the state of Arizona in the 100m, 200m, and 400m while the 4x4 relay team she ran with placed fourth at the state meet. She boasts a 4.5 GPA and is currently president of Desert Vista's Spanish Honors Society.
