Burrell Resets Career-High Saves In Loss

MORAGA, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's soccer was unable to crack the scoreboard and dropped a closely contested match against unbeaten Saint Mary's College, Friday night. The Roadrunners are on a five-game skid after the 2-0 loss at SMC.

"I am gutted for our kids, they played hard, they battled, they tried to apply the information given and we keep coming out emptied handed,"  explained head coach Sebastian Vecchio.

A soft and short pass between CSUB defenders was intercepted by Suzana Shibukawa who had a one-on-one look at goal and converted the Gaels first shot of the match in the 6th minute.

"We have to stop making crucial mistakes to give ourselves a chance to win," added Vecchio. "We are playing a very challenging schedule and we can't afford errors like we had the last four games."

Bakersfield struggled to create corners and shot opportunities, earning one corner in the 16th minute and one shot in the 45th on a free kick by Kayla Edwards.

Saint Mary's College (Calif.) made an insurance goal in the 63rd minute to give the Gaels a 2-0 edge over the Roadrunners. A shot from Amari Bailey near the 83rd minute mark was wide right and would be the `Runners last attempt in the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Flavia Burrell reset her career-high in saves with a game-best nine.

CSUB returns home for a matinee against Gonzaga on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. when the Zags come to the Main Soccer Field. The Roadrunners are 0-5-1 heading into the match with the Bulldogs.
