Men's Soccer Adds a Pair for 2021

Bakersfield, Calif. – Goalkeeper Scott Pengelly and midfielder Niklas Roessler have joined CSU Bakersfield Men's Soccer for the Spring semester. Pengelly joins the Roadrunners as a true freshman from Northern Ireland, while Roessler is a graduate transfer from the University at Albany.

"We are delighted that both Scott and Niklas have joined our program as we prepare to compete in the Big West Conference," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant

At 6-2, 185 pounds, Pengelly hails from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and attended Blackpool & Fylde College in Blackpool, England. During one stretch of his senior season, he recorded ten consecutive clean sheets. Off the field, Pengelly earned a Triple Distinction Star for earning full marks in his academic studies and was named as a Fleetwood Town Academy Scholar.

Pengelly has also represented Northern Ireland at the U16, U17, U18 and U19 levels, including the 2018 European Championships.

The son of Richard and Debbie Pengelly, he plans to major in Biology at CSUB.

"Scott arrives in Bakersfield with big expectations on account of his experiences representing his country," Grant said. "Scott has the quality and attitude to help us accomplish our goals."

Roessler is a 5-11, 165-pound midfielder who spent two seasons at Salem University, before playing a season in Albany. He appeared in 16 games, and made 13 starts, with the Great Danes a season ago, scoring a pair of goals and adding four assists. Both of his goals were game winners.

At Salem, Roessler appeared in 32 contests scoring four goals, while assisting on three more. In 2018, he scored twice in the Tigers' 2-1 win over Bluefield College.

A native of Stuttgart, Germany, he is the son of Wolfgang and Claudia Roessler. He is pursuing an MBA at CSUB.

"Niklas adds quality to our midfield and he has the advantage of three years of experience," Grant explained. "We are pleased that Niklas choose to complete his college experience with our program."

The two newcomers will compete for the `Runners beginning in the Fall of 2021, CSUB's first as a member of the Big West Conference.

Bakersfield finished the 2019 season with an 8-11 overall record and a 6-5 mark in the Western Athletic Conference, advancing to the semi-finals of the league tournament.
