Ducharme Wins Pac-12 Championship, Advances to NCAA Tournament

Corvallis, Ore. – Dominic Ducharme rode out the clock in overtime to capture the Pac-12 Championship at 184 and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in his career. Angelo Martinoni finished third at 141 and awaits a decision on whether that placement will be good enough for him to join Ducharme at the National Tournament in St. Louis, next month.

Ducharme's qualification extends the Roadrunner streak of sending at least one wrestler to the NCAA Championship Meet to 48 years.

Ducharme opened his championship run with a first-round pin of Cal Poly's Dylan Miracle. It was the 19th stick of Ducharme's CSUB career, moving him into sole possession of 25th-place all-time.

The rest of the tournament was a war of attrition for the CSUB senior, whose talent on the ground was the difference.

Ducharme suffered an early takedown in his semi-final bout against Arizona State's Cade Belshay and trailed 2-1 after the first period. Ducharme all-but clinched the ride-time point in the second, when he ground down Belshay for the entire period. An early third-round escape was all he needed to advance to the finals.

He fell behind again in the final, suffering a second-period reversal to Oregon State's Ryan Reyes, but he picked up three-consecutive escapes and road Reyes for the entire third period of overtime, to capture his first Pac-12 Championship through will, as much as skill.

"I was ready to do whatever it took to finish my career with a Pac-12 Title," said Ducharme, a fifth year `Runner from Windsor, Calif. "Not being able to compete in this tournament last year, watching from the sideline, it lit a fire under me more than anything ever had before."

Ducharme also reached the NCAA Tournament in 2019, finishing 1-2 in the 184 lb bracket.

Martinoni opened his tournament with a surprise match-up against Stanford's Real Woods, who had yet to wrestle this season, but is one of the top grapplers in the weight class.

Woods dropped Martinoni just 0:17 seconds into the first but managed only a single escape the rest of the way. Martinoni scored a takedown of his own early in the third and fought for nearfall points, but never managed to spin his Stanford opponent, losing 3-2.

The third-year sophomore rebounded nicely, posting a pin of Arizona State's Julian Chlebove (4:47) and grabbing an early 6-0 lead over Cal Poly's Lawrence Saenze, before the later gave way due to injury just 0:24 into the third-place bout.

Martinoni could still grab the Pac-12's second allocation at 141, over Woods, who competed just three times today, his only action this season, but that decision has not yet been announced. Martinoni has wrestled five matches this season, one more than the NCAA announced threshold of four.

Chance Rich also turned in a terrific tournament, placing second at 133 pounds, one of the deepest weight classes in the conference.

Rich blew past Little Rock's Paul Bianchi in round one, 9-3, before winning a dramatic 6-4 overtime battle with top-seeded Michael McGee.

Tied at four, heading into overtime, Rich got into the legs of McGee midway through the sudden victory frame to score potentially the biggest win of his young career.

He would eventually fall 3-1 to Oregon State's Devan Turner in the 133 lb championship contest.

Rich now awaits a potential at large bid to nationals. Those spots will be announced on Monday, March 8th.

Albert Urias and Jacob Sieder each earned fourth-place finishes at this year's tournament, while Kalani Tonge, Eddie Flores and Josh Loomer placed fifth. Hunter LaRue and Brock Rogers were sixth.

Ducharme, and potentially one or two more `Runners, will represent CSUB at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis on Mar. 18-21.

The `Runners placed fifth in the team competition with 97.5 points.
