Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Sweep Tritons with 65-50 Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team used a big second half to pull away from UC San Diego Saturday night, completing a weekend sweep inside the Icardo Center. A 16-0 run in the second half helped the Roadrunners sprint away and CSUB finished with 65-50 victory over the Tritons.

"I'm really proud of our guys," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's tenth-year Head Coach. "This was a tough weekend for us. Obviously they came and played us zone and decided they were going to play zone the whole weekend after we didn't handle it that well [last night]…It's always tough to get a sweep and I'm proud of our guys."

Barnes and his squad have used their depth and athleticism in this unprecedented season to post a 6-1 record in the second game of their series against Big West opponents. Bakersfield's Head Coach credited his coaching staff for being able to adjust on the fly: "This staff works extremely hard. I was on the phone last night at 12:30 with those guys…I can't say enough about them. These guys are committed to winning."

Bakersfield looked to a trio of `Runner seniors to lead the way on Saturday night. Point guard Czar Perry posted a double-double with 12 points and a new career-high 11 assists. Perry's assists total came up one shy of CSUB's Division I single-game record, held by former `Runner Justin Pride (12, vs. Seattle U, 3/11/16).

Redshirt senior Justin Edler-Davis added to the CSUB effort by chipping in 19 points and four rebounds. Senior center Ronne Readus, who made his first start since Jan. 1, pulled down an impressive 15 rebounds for the `Runners.

First Half

Despite a tightly contested first half, the `Runners never trailed and CSUB used an 8-2 run to take a 23-14 lead with just over five minutes left in the period. UCSD did not let its deficit get out of hand, using strong shooting from the field (47.6 percent) to stay within reach of CSUB. Bakersfield closed out the opening period with a 28-23 advantage.

Edler-Davis paced all scorers with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting while converting on 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arc. Perry, a native of El Dorado, Ark., posted a season-high six assists in just the first 20 minutes of action. Readus chipped in six rebounds, three on each end of the court.

Second Half

An early three-pointer pulled UCSD within two points, but Bakersfield answered with a 16-0 run to earn a 44-26 advantage just over five minutes into the period. CSUB went on to extend its lead to 20 points at 55-35, just over the halfway mark. The Tritons were unable to close the gap and Bakersfield's smothering offense held UCSD to its lowest scoring effort of the season.

CSUB wrapped up the game with a 65-50 victory thanks, in part, to its 41-26 advantage in rebounding. The `Runners outscored the Tritons 20-4 in second chance points and Bakersfield used turned its defensive effort into offense with seven steals and five blocks.

Shaun Williams rounded out a strong offensive weekend with an 11-point performance on Saturday after scoring 24 points the night before. Taze Moore did a little bit of everything, adding seven points, three rebounds, five assists, two steals, and three blocks.

Next Week

CSUB (14-7, 8-4 BWC) will head back out for its last Big West road series this upcoming week. The `Runners are scheduled to face off against Big West-leading UC Santa Barbara, Feb. 19-20, in a pair of games in southern California. UCSB (13-3, 7-2 BWC) current sits atop the Big West standings on win percentage, pending results from Saturday night's game in Hawai'i (9 p.m. PT tipoff).
