Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Fall on Road to Pac-12's Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. – A second-half surge helped the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team cut its deficit to single digits on the road at Pac-12 program Colorado Saturday afternoon, but the Roadrunners ran out of time and fell to the Buffaloes, 60-46.

"I thought we hung in there," said Rod Barnes, Bakersfield's Head Coach. "Early on we dug too big of a hole for ourselves. We have got to execute better. They got a good team and they are well coached. We got [the deficit] down to eight, then had two really bad plays to give them the opportunity to go back up. When you go on the road and put yourself in that situation, it makes it difficult to win."

Sixth-year `Runner Justin Edler-Davis posted eight points and eight rebounds against the lengthy Colorado squad while fellow senior Shawn Stith recorded eight points and six boards. Another senior forward, Justin McCall, tallied eight points and five rebounds while sophomore point guard Kaleb Higgins had nine points and two steals on Saturday.

Colorado (9-3, 1-1 Pac-12) jumped out to an early, 14-4 lead on the `Runners in the first six minutes of the game, but Bakersfield never let its host increase that advantage. CSUB kept its deficit in single digits through the rest of the half and went to the locker room trailing the Buffs 24-15.

While Bakersfield kept the Colorado offense from heating up, CSUB's offensive struggles prevented the `Runners from closing the gap. Barnes' squad hit just 19 percent of its first-half shots while holding Colorado to 37 percent shooting from the floor.

The Buffs continued shooting well from three-point range in the second half and surged ahead to a 16-point lead, 37-21, five minutes into the period. Halfway through the half, Colorado jumped out to its biggest lead of 17 points. A 13-4 response helped CSUB cut its deficit to single digits at 52-44 with 5:14 on the clock, but the `Runners would not be able to close the gap any further, eventually falling by a final score of 60-46.

Bakersfield shot a much-improved 36 percent from the floor in the second half, but the Buffs hit 50 percent of their own field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes.

CSUB (4-4) has wrapped up its final non-conference road trip of the season and the `Runners will head back to Bakersfield to prepare for their last game before Big West Conference play starts. On Tuesday, Dec. 21, CSUB will host Dartmouth in the Icardo Center with tipoff against the Ivy League university scheduled for 2 p.m. (PT).
