Bakersfield Women Edged at Fresno State

Fresno, Calif. – A shorthanded CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team gave host Fresno State all it could handle, Saturday afternoon at the Bulldog Aquatic Center, falling narrowly to their Centra Valley rival, 176.0-124.0. The Roadrunners raced just 11 healthy swimmers, but still managed to grab seven individual victories, from five different swimmers, against a full Fresno State roster of 32.

"We've had a challenging couple of weeks with travel demands and injuries," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "I'm proud of how our team responded to those challenges today. We didn't let them affect us and we received great swims across the board. It was nice to see so many different contributors."

Autumn D'Arcy and Mikayla Popham each won two of their three individual races, while Ariane Skeggs and freshmen Danielle Albright and Lorena Jerebic also won titles for Bakersfield.

CSUB added a pair of second place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle relays along with eight diving points.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Junior Autumn D'Arcy won the 100 Freestyle (52.07) and the 100 Butterfly (54.70), while finishing second in the 100 Backstroke (56.46). Her two victories give her 13 for the season and 59 for her Roadrunner career. She remains just one win shy of matching Paola Hernandez' Division I era school record for career wins.
  • Sophomore Mikayla Popham matched D'Arcy with a pair of wins, taking first place in the 200 Freestyle (1:51.79) and the 200 IM (2:05.54), while placing second in the 200 Backstroke (2:03.94). Popham has 12 wins this season and 28 in her career.
  • Ariane Skeggs won the 500 Freestyle for the first time this season, posting a time of 5:08.78 to lead a CSUB Sweep of the event. Jessica Franco was second (5:10.21) and Hannah Marsh was third (5:11.38).
  • Skeggs added a third-place finish in the 1000 Freestyle (10:27.17), while Marsh was fifth (10:37.93). Franco was fourth in the 200 Freestyle (1:56.86).
  • Freshman Danielle Albright won the 100 Breaststroke in 1:07.29. It was her second win in the event this season and third overall. She added a third-place finish in the 200 Breaststroke (2:25.99).
  • Classmate Lorena Jerebic touched first in the 200 Butterfly (2:05.28) for her fourth individual title of the season. Jerebic was second to D'Arcy in the 100 Butterfly (57.73).
  • Maria Wold had top-four finishes in the 100 Backstroke (1:00.95), the 200 Backstroke (2:08.96) and the 200 IM (2:11.71).
  • Lauren Carsen (236.85) and Maya Stefanski (228.98) placed third and fourth in the 1-Meter diving competition, respectively.
  • Freshman Gizzelle Handschumacher was the team's top scorer on the 3-Meter board with a fourth-place finish (210.53).
