Wrestling Debuts at Menlo, Bill Musick Opens

Bakersfield, Calif. – Nineteen CSU Bakersfield wrestlers made their season debuts this weekend at either the Menlo Open or the Bill Musick Open, ahead of the Roadrunners first dual of the year at the University of Michigan on Nov. 14. Senior Josh Brown placed second in the 149-pound weight class to lead CSUB at the Menlo Open, while unattached freshman Cade Lucio, Isaac Salas and Richard Castro-Sandoval won championships at the Bill Musick.
 
"We have a lot of things to work on, but I'm pleased with our overall effort this weekend," said CSUB Head Coach Luke Smith. "The Menlo Open is always a good opportunity to see where you are as a team and we got some great performances, particularly from Josh, Albert and Augie."
 
Albert Urias, a two-year starter at 174-pounds, placed third at the Menlo Open with a 5-1 record, earning a major decision and three technical fall victories in the process.
 
Freshman Augustine Garcia took third in the 165-pound weight class while wrestling unattached. He knocked off teammate Hunter LaRue in the third-place bout with a 4-1 decision. Garcia's lone loss came to Stanford's Shane Griffith, the defending national champion at 165.
 
Nebraska transfer Tyler Deen was 3-2 in the 149-pound bracket, finishing fourth.
 
In addition to Bakersfield's three titles at the Bill Musick, Jose Landin (3rd, 141), Mateo Morales (4th, 197) and Jaden Sanchez (4th, 184) earned podium finishes while competing unattached.

The Roadrunners open the dual meet season with a trip to Big Ten power, the University of Michigan on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. Pacific. Notable…
* Bakersfield's three returning NCAA Tournament Qualifiers, Josh Loomer, Angelo Martinoni and Chance Rich did not compete this weekend.
* Brown is now 8-1 at the Menlo Open in his CSUB career, the Anaheim, Calif., native won the event in 2019 with a perfect 4-0 record. He was 4-1 in this year's event, winning four-straight before falling in the final to Stanford's Jaden Abas.
* Urias also won a Menlo Open title at 174-pounds in 2019. This year, the Bakersfield regular posted a 5-1 record, including three tech fall victories and a major decision, to place third.
* Four `Runners competed in the 165-pound bracket, led by Garcia's third-place effort. Bradley Harper (0-2), Hunter LaRue (4-2) and Braden Smelser (2-2) also competed in the weight class, which featured three CSUB intrasquad bouts.
* Castro-Sandoval captured the 125-pound weight class at the Bill Musick with three pins in three bouts. Lucio and Salas each earned one win by fall in their runs to titles.
