CSUB Pushes Big West Leader Hawai'i on Senior Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Facing the Big West Conference leader Hawai'i, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team engaged in a war in the Icardo Center Friday night. The host Roadrunners pushed the Rainbow Wahine as far as they could bend, but the visiting squad pulled out a four-set victory over CSUB (24-26, 26-24, 23-25, 19-25).

"I think we played with them for the first three sets really well," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "I knew we were going to have to be great for a long period of time to beat a team like Hawai'i and unfortunately we fell short. I thought we had our moments. One or two extra plays and the game could have been different."

CSUB (17-9, 10-8 BWC) went toe-to-toe with Hawai'i (19-6, 16-1 BWC), which boasts one of the most potent offenses in the conference. Bakersfield enjoyed great hitting from four different `Runners, each of whom posted double-digit kill totals against Hawai'i: Hana Makonova (15), Milica Vukobrat (13), Brooke Boiseau (11), and Hayley McCluskey (11). Setter Seleisa Elisaia tallied 45 assists in Bakersfield's four-set loss.

Neither team was able to gain more than a three-point lead over their opponent in the first set and the score was tied 16 times, all the way down to 24-24. Visitor Hawai'i clinched the hard-fought game as Amber Igiede sent her seventh kill of the set to the floor.

As if a nail-biting first set was not enough, the second game proved to be just as close. After 14 more tied scores, including at 24-24 again, CSUB came out on top this time for a 26-24 win. Outside hitter Vukobrat picked up a big kill to give CSUB a set point opportunity and a Hawai'i attack went wide as Bakersfield tied the match, 1-1.

The first two sets gave way to another clash in the third. Late in the game, Bakersfield fended off one set point at 24-22, but the Rainbow Wahine sealed a 25-23 victory and went ahead 2-1 on the night.

Hawai'i jumped out in front of CSUB in the fourth and final set with an early lead. The `Runners did not back down and traded points with their visitors all the way to the end of the match, but the Rainbow Wahine closed out the 3-1 victory with a 25-19 win.

CSUB's Senior Night ended with a loss, but the `Runners sent their four seniors off with an epic battle. Next week, Bakersfield will hit the road to close out the regular season with two final matches. The `Runners will take on UC San Diego on Friday, Nov. 26, before wrapping things up at UC Irvine the following evening.
