CSUB Veterans Lead Charge at Roadrunner Invitational

Bakersfield, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women finished off a weekend sweep of the relays, and the Roadrunner men took home the 400 Medley relay as the team events once again keyed a strong CSUB performance at the Roadrunner Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Hillman Aquatic Center.

"Relays score a lot of points at championship meets and our performances in those events show just how capable we are of competing in the MPSF," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We have a few loose ends to tie up with our meet maintenance but considering this was the first college meet for all of our freshmen and sophomores I'm proud of how the team responded this weekend."

The `Runner women took home relay titles in the 400 Medley and the 400 Freestyle events, with returners Mikayla Popham, Autumn D'Arcy and Tabea Mose boosting both units. Ariane Skeggs joined the trio in winning the 400 Freestyle relay, while freshman breaststroker Danielle Albright was a part of the medley.

Popham was part of all three winning relays on Friday and added a pair of individual titles today, winning both the 50 Free and the 500 Free. Popham finished the weekend with three individual victories and five relay titles over the last two days.

D'Arcy took home top honors in the 100 Free for her second individual win of the opening weekend. She was also a part of all-five winning relays and now boasts 48 individual victories in her three-year career, just 12 shy of Paola Hernandez' school record.

Skeggs posted top-five finishes in both the 200 Free and the 500 Free, placing fourth and third, respectively.

Freshman Melinda Johnson swam the best race of her young career when she placed second in the 200 Back, while classmate Lorena Jerebic was fourth in the 200 Fly and fifth in the 200 IM.

The men opened the meet with another medley relay victory, this time in the 400 distance with Kris Rogic, Antonio Milin, Loren Gillilan and Ryan Brimer chipping in for the win. Rogic, Milin and Brimer also joined freshman Tim Engel to place second in the 400 Free Relay.

Brimer also picked up his first individual win of the year with a title in the 200 Free.

Rogic, who won twice yesterday, added a second-place finish in the 200 Back and a fourth-place effort in the 400 IM.

Gillilan added two second-place finishes, earning runner-up honors in the 200 IM and the 200 Fly.

Engel was sixth in the 50 Free, while freshman Kadin Denner posted a second top-five swim of the weekend with a fifth-place time in the 500 Free.

Bakersfield is idle next weekend, before opening dual meet competition on Oct. 30 at home versus Pomona-Pitzer. Both the Roadrunner men and women posted winning dual meet records in 2019-20, with the men finishing 4-2 and the women collecting a 5-4 mark.
