Relays Spark CSUB in Season Opening Invitational

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield combined to win four of six relays to kick off the 2021-22 season in style at the CSUB Sprint Invitational Friday afternoon at the John S. Hillman Aquatic Center. In their first test against Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opponents, the Roadrunner men placed second, while the women finished just one and a half points behind Cal Poly for third.

"This was our first test as a member of the MPSF and we showed that we'll be competitive this season," said Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We had great performances on our relays and from the top of the line-up, but with smaller rosters this season finding some depth scoring will be important."

The Bakersfield women swept all three relays, the 200 Medley Relay, the 200 Free Relay and the 800 Free Relay. Autumn D'Arcy and Mikayla Popham swam on all three relay teams, while junior Tabea Mose was a part of both 200 relays.

All three added individual titles with D'Arcy claiming the 50 Fly title, Popham winning the 50 Free and Mose finishing first in the 50 Back.

Freshman Lorena Jerebic placed third in the 50 Fly and seventh in the 100 IM, while also swimming as part of the 800 Free Relay team with D'Arcy, Popham and Ariane Skeggs.

Another first year scholar-athlete, Danielle Albright earned a first-place finish as part of the 200 Medley Relay and added a second-place finish in the 50 Breast.

Leah Kirkman and Hannah Marsh also collected top-five finishes. Kirkman was third in the 50 Back, while Marsh placed fourth in the 1000 Free.

Kris Rogic led the charge for the men's team winning individual titles in the 50 Back and the 100 IM, while swimming the anchor leg on CSUB's 200 Medley Relay winner.

His countryman Antonio Milin also won an individual race, leading three `Runners in the top-five of the 50 Breast. Freshmen Kadin Denner and Skyler Carmelich placed second and fourth, respectively.

Milin was also second in the 50 Free and swam the breaststroke leg on the 200 Medley Relay.

Denner added a second top-five finish with a fifth-place effort in the 1000 Free.

Senior butterfly specialist Loren Gillilan was second in the 50 Fly.

The `Runners placed second in both the 200 Free Relay and the 800 Free Relay.

Seniors Rogic, Ryan Brimer, Gillilan and freshman Tim Engel swam the 800 relay for Bakersfield, while Brimer and Engel were also part of the 200 Free team.

The Roadrunners are back in the pool Saturday, for the Roadrunner Invitational, a meet scheduled to feature the longer distance swims. UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and San Jose State all return for the second meet of the weekend at CSUB. Racing begins at 10:00 a.m.
