Cal Poly Downs CSUB on the Central Coast

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A pair of back and forth sets gave way to a lopsided final set in Tuesday evening's volleyball match between CSU Bakersfield and Cal Poly. Early in the match the visiting Roadrunners swung with the Mustangs, one of the Big West Conference's top three teams, but Cal Poly finished strong to earn a 3-0 victory in Mott Athletics Center.

"I thought we played flat today," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "We weren't even close to being ourselves. Cal Poly is a great team, but we didn't execute today."

CSUB kept its host close through most of the opening set, but Cal Poly held a 20-16 advantage. The Mustangs won five of the last seven points to claim the first set, 25-18. Hana Makonova led all `Runners with three kills in the opening game.

Cal Poly jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but Makonova sparked a 5-0 run to help CSUB tie the score at 16-16. A middle blocker from the Czech Republic, Makonova tallied two blocks and two kills in the run. From a 19-19 tie, Cal Poly put together another late surge and gained a 2-0 lead on the match with a 25-20 win in Set 2.

The Mustangs continued rolling into Set 3 and finished off the match with a dominant, 25-9 victory. After recording just eight attack errors combined in the first two games, CSUB tallied nine attack errors in the final set.

Makonova, a redshirt sophomore, led CSUB with eight kills while tallying three blocks on Tuesday. Redshirt junior Brooke Boiseau chipped in five kills on .500 hitting while adding three blocks. A converted middle blocker, Boiseau now has 266 career block assists as she passed Sydney Haynes for second in CSUB's Division I history (since 2007).

With the loss, CSUB fell to 10-5 on the year with a 3-4 Big West record while Cal Poly improved to 8-10 and remained with just one loss in league play (6-1 BWC). Bakersfield's next opponent will not be any easier as the `Runners have a date with Big West-leading Hawai'i (9-5, 6-0 BWC) on Saturday, Oct. 16. `Runner fans can watch that match live on ESPN+ with first serve scheduled for 10 p.m. (PT) in Honolulu.
