CSUB Student-Athletes Reach New Academic Heights

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield Athletics Department is celebrating the results of an outstanding academic year as Roadrunner student-athletes posted record-breaking marks in the classroom. CSUB Athletics collectively posted new highs in overall cumulative GPA and the best cumulative GPA posted by either the men or the women, all of which was catalyzed by Spring 2020 when the `Runners posted a combined grade-point average of 3.24

"I am so proud of all of our `Runners for their dedication and commitment to the classroom," CSUB Director of Athletics Dr. Kenneth "Ziggy" Siegfried said. "Academic excellence is the focal point in our Athletics Department's mission and the results of this academic year are indicative of that pledge. I want to congratulate our student-athletes, our coaches, and the Kegley Center academics staff for working so hard to achieve these record breaking marks."

Ten CSUB teams posted cumulative GPA's of over 3.00, led by the `Runner women's golf team, which posted a 3.51 program GPA. The men's swimming and diving squad led all men's teams with a mark of 3.01. Overall, several `Runner teams tallied record performances in the classroom this year.

"We are very proud of our scholar-athletes, for they have shown great resilience and strength in the classroom," said Melisa Medina Cruz, CSUB's Assistant Athletics Director for Academic Services. "Despite the current national and global situation impacting the scholastic experience, collaboration and support from campus and our department played a key role to the overall academic success. We look forward to the upcoming year and will continue to work as a team to provide academic support to our scholar-athletes and continue to strive for academic excellence."

151 `Runners earned at least a 3.00 GPA in the spring semester and were named to the Athletics Director's Honor Roll. That total represents 58-percent of all student-athletes at CSUB. The women's swimming and diving team led the way this spring with the ladies pacing all women's teams with a 3.65 term GPA while the men's soccer team posted a 3.27 to lead all `Runner men.

The `Runners posted a cumulative 3.12 GPA for the 2019-20 academic school year. Based on 2018-19 Academic Progress Report data, all 15 CSUB athletic programs have earned a multi-year APR of at least 940.

As CSUB Athletics continues to excel in the classroom, the Department is committed to continuing to improve. Every `Runner that enters CSUB is encouraged to achieve their academic goals as Athletics and the University work together to produce quality graduates who are ready to impact the Bakersfield Community and the world.
