CSUB Battles at UCR, Drops Doubleheader

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After a slow start to Saturday's doubleheader against UC Riverside, the CSU Bakersfield softball team showed fight in the second game of the day. Despite their valiant battle, the Roadrunners fell in both games on Day 2 of the UCR Classic.

CSUB 0, UCR 8 (5 inn.)

UC Riverside got out to a quick start against CSUB's freshman starter, Talia Nielsen, as the Highlanders tallied three runs in the first and second innings. Junior Daryn Hitzel came in to relieve and rallied for a strong third inning, but UCR tacked on a run in the fourth and fifth innings to cap the run-rule victory.

Bakersfield's pitchers did not get much help from their offense as the `Runners tallied just two hits and one walk in the game. Redshirt sophomore Katie Jackson was the bright spot of the game for CSUB as the outfielder went 2-for-2 from the plate with a pair of singles.

Nielsen (1-4) took the loss after pitching 1.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. Hitzel pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out a pair of Highlanders.

CSUB 6, UCR 9

The `Runners struck first in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Ariana Acedo, a junior first baseman, blasted a solo home run to dead center, giving CSUB a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. In the bottom of the third, some mental miscues by the `Runners helped UC Riverside take a 3-1 lead.

CSUB answered right back in the next half inning, scoring a pair of runs to tie the score. Acedo tallied her second RBI with a grounder that brought Karah Wiseman around to score. Sam Fontaine then recorded her first collegiate triple to plate fellow freshman Baylee Garrett. The tie did not last long as UCR responded with a three-run homer to take a 6-3 lead to the fifth inning.

With two `Runners in scoring position and two outs in the top of the fifth, Samantha Martinez delivered a clutch single. The base hit drove in a pair of runs and pulled CSUB within one run at 6-5. UCR pulled off a double steal in the bottom half of the inning and added one run to its lead.

Bakersfield continued to fight, drawing within one run again in the top of the sixth. After Fontaine doubled to lead off the frame, she ended up at third and came home on a Cydney Curran sacrifice fly. The Highlanders would not give up the lead easily, putting two more runs on the board to send CSUB to its final three outs with a 9-6 score. A late rally was not in the cards for the `Runners, who fell to the host Highlanders.

Acedo and Fontaine provided much of the offensive spark for the `Runners in Game 2. The former recorded two RBI while hitting her first home run of the season while Fontaine, who hails from Granada Hills, Calif., tallied a pair of extra-base hits while scoring a run and driving one in. Curran went 1-for-1 with a walk, a run, and an RBI against the Highlanders.

In the circle, Hitzel (0-9) took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings as the junior lefty allowed seven runs on eight hits, two walks, and a strikeout. Nielsen threw the final inning and a third, giving up just one earned run to UCR.

Tomorrow

CSUB (1-12) will return to Amy S. Harrison field on Sunday for one final game at the UCR Classic. The `Runners are scheduled for a rematch against Southern Utah with first pitch set for 9 a.m.
