Late Lead Slips Away Against Southern Utah

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – An outstanding offensive outing by the CSU Bakersfield softball team was overshadowed by a late rally from Southern Utah. The Roadrunners watched a large lead slip away as the Thunderbirds walked off for a 10-9 victory to close out the UCR Classic on Sunday.

On the day, senior catcher Karah Wiseman went 3-for-4 with three stolen bases. Three other `Runners --  Katie Jackson, Samantha Martinez, and Cydney Curran – tallied a pair of hits each as CSUB recorded a season-high 13 hits.

The `Runners came out of the gate with an aggressive mindset, which led to a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Jackson and Wiseman pulled off a double steal to score a run. Wiseman then stole third base and came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the `Runners a 2-0 lead over Southern Utah.

In the top of the second, Martinez delivered an RBI single that plated junior Candace Haliburton as CSUB took a 3-0 advantage over SUU. The `Runners increased their lead to 4-0 in the next frame when Ally Miller drove in Sam Fontaine with an RBI single. Miller came around to score later in the third on another double steal attempt as CSUB went ahead by five runs.

SUU finally got on the board, plating a single run in the bottom of the third. Bakersfield responded by tacking on two more runs in the fourth, going ahead 7-1, as Ariana Acedo delivered an RBI triple and later scored on an error. The Thunderbirds scored another run in the fourth, but Bakersfield added two runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 9-2. Acedo picked up another RBI in that frame, finishing with a team-high four RBI on the weekend.

The sixth inning proved to be costly for the `Runners, who could not slow a big rally from the Thunderbirds. CSUB gave up six runs on five hits, two hit batters, and a pair of wild pitches before finally stopping the bleeding with its lead down to one run at 9-8.

SUU came back to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and used three-straight base hits, including two doubles, to walk off for a 10-9 victory in Riverside. Junior pitcher Daryn Hitzel (0-10) took the loss after throwing 5.2 innings and allowing six earned runs. Freshman Talia Nielsen pitched one inning in relief and gave up four runs to the Thunderbirds.

CSUB (1-13) will be back on the road next week, Mar. 14-15, with a three-game road series scheduled against future Big West Conference opponent UC Davis.
