`Runners Finish BWC/WCC Challenge 1-2

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – With strong winds blowing and cold rain coming down, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team fought through and posted a 1-2 record at the Big West/West Coast Challenge. The Roadrunners dropped a close match against Santa Clara, fell against a strong Saint Mary's squad, then finished out the day with a convincing victory over San Francisco.

"In the first match of the day, we couldn't manage the windy conditions well in key matches," said Cesar Benatti, CSUB's Head Coach. "That was decisive for the overall results. Our mindset wasn't the best going into the match. The second match, we played a really good team that administrated the extreme weather better than us…We finished the day with a solid win over USF, playing our best volleyball, executing all actions well, and managing the wind in a great way. It was a good way to finish the day."

Santa Clara 3, CSUB 2

Bakersfield's top pairing held on for a gritty victory against Santa Clara. The `Runner 2's and 3's took their first losses of the season after going 6-0 to start the year. CSUB's No. 5 pair improved to 5-1 on the season and 2-0 as the 5's.

The lone victory for the `Runners came at the No. 5 pair. Leisa Elisaia and Jazleigh Ortiz improved to 4-3 on the year and 4-1 as the 5's.

The `Runners (6-3) will return to their home courts next weekend. CSUB will host The Master's University and Concordia Irvine in a tri-dual on Saturday, Mar. 14. Admission to CSUB beach volleyball matches is free and fans are encouraged to come out and root on the `Runners.
