`Runners Fall to Southern Utah, Michigan State

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield bats combined for 14 hits over two games on Saturday, but the Roadrunner softball team dropped a pair of games to Southern Utah and Michigan State to open the UCR Classic.

Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners, had a succinct message regarding her team's performance after the CSUB defense tallied three errors and the pitching staff allowed 10 earned runs on the day: "We have to get mentally tougher on the field."

CSUB 4, Southern Utah 8

The `Runners loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first inning, but CSUB was unable to capitalize on its opportunity. Southern Utah plated a run in the top of the second on an RBI double from first baseman Brooke Brown. In the top of the fourth, the Thunderbirds exploited a CSUB error by going on to score three unearned innings in the frame, taking a 4-0 lead.

Bakersfield responded in the next half inning by cutting its deficit in half. Senior Karah Wiseman plated fellow senior Jocelyn Betancourt with an RBI double. Later in the fourth, Wiseman came around to score on an SUU error, making the score 4-2 after four innings. The Thunderbirds tacked on two more runs in the fifth and seventh innings, sending the `Runners to their final three outs with an 8-2 deficit.

CSUB rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on Candace Haliburton's RBI single. The `Runners kept rolling, loading the bases for Betancourt, who scored a run on an RBI groundout. Bakersfield loaded the bases once again, but SUU got the final out to stop the CSUB momentum and seal an 8-4 victory.

Haliburton led the `Runner offense, going 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a run, and an RBI. Senior Cydney Curran was 1-for-3 with a walk while freshman Baylee Garrett reached base safely both times at the plate with a walk and a single.

Pitching 4.0 innings and giving up four runs, three of which were unearned, junior Daryn Hitzel suffered the loss on Friday morning. Talia Nielsen, a freshman who pitched in relief, threw the final three innings, allowing four runs but also striking out four batters.

CSUB 2, Michigan State 6

The Spartans got out to a quick lead after scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Michigan State added one run in the fourth and sixth innings, taking a 6-0 lead into the seventh.

The `Runners started to rally again when Wiseman led the top of the seventh off with a triple to the opposite-field gap, her second three-bagger of the season. Freshman Sam Fontaine quickly plated Bakersfield's catcher with an RBI double before Katie Jackson tallied a pinch-hit, RBI single. The CSUB rally would end there as the final three `Runners were retired and MSU held on for a 6-2 victory.

Fontaine finished the game going 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. For the second-straight game, CSUB tallied seven hits, but the `Runners were unable to slow the Spartan offense as Hitzel (0-8) took a loss after giving up four runs in 2.2 innings of work. Nielsen pitched the final 3.1 innings for CSUB, allowing just one earned run to MSU in that span.

Tomorrow

The `Runners (1-10) will return to Amy S. Harrison Field on Saturday for another pair of games at the UCR Classic. Bakersfield is set to take on tournament host UC Riverside in a doubleheader with first pitch of Game 1 scheduled for 1 p.m.
