`Runners Come Up Short at #14 Stanford

Bakersfield, Calif. – Russell Rohlfing picked up his 18th win of the season and Jarrod Snyder collected his fifth victory in his last six bouts, but CSU Bakersfield couldn't overcome #14 Stanford in Palo Alto, Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal won five of the last six bouts to close on a 17-6 run and win by a final score of 28-12. The loss snapped the Roadrunner's three-match winning streak and drops them to 5-5 overall.

"I thought we were a little flat early," said CSUB Head Coach Manny Rivera. "They started faster than us and were able to sustain that pace throughout the match."

After Stanford's Karmon Foster knocked off Albert Urias at 174, Josh Loomer picked up his second-straight victory at 184 to knot the team score at three.

Loomer outscored the Cardinal's Nick Addison 3-1 in the second frame to grab a 4-3 lead heading into the final period. Addison started the third frame on the bottom, and eventually escaped, but a subsequent takedown and a long ride gave Loomer a 6-4 lead with the ride time point in his pocket. He'd hold on to win the bout by a 7-5 margin.

"Josh has been doing things the right way and he's starting to get the results to match," said Rivera. "He's feeling confident and he'll carry a lot of momentum into next week."

Loomer joined Snyder and Rohlfing in going a perfect 2-0 this weekend.

Snyder knocked off David Showunmi by a score of 6-5. The two heavyweights were tied at four after Showunmi escaped early in the third period, but the Stanford wrestler had already clinched the ride time point. Needing to make something happen, Snyder went on the offensive and registered a takedown with less than a minute remaining to earn the win.

"Jarrod made some changes a while back and things are really working for him," said Rivera. "He's been so consistent with his pressure; he's wrestling great defensively and he's not giving up anything easy."

Rohlfing won his sixth straight when he pinned Stanford's Dawson Sihavong at 4:16. In that stretch he's beaten two ranked opponents, posted two shutouts, two major decision victories and a technical fall win in addition to today's stick. With the win he improved to 18-7 on the season and 8-2 in dual matches. It was also the 81st victory of his Roadrunner career, moving him into sole possession of 32nd place on CSUB Wrestling's career wins list.

Josh Annis filled in for Dominic Ducharme at 197 and faced a massive challenge in Stanford's #8 Nathan Traxler. Traxler entered the meet with a 16-3 record and ended up getting the better of the much lighter Annis when he pinned him two minutes into the match.

Annis, who wrestled at 157 all of last season, had already competed this season at 174 and 184 before adding 197 to his resume today.

"Josh had nothing to lose and set a great example by taking on this challenge today," Rivera added. "He has a lot of heart, he's very competitive and it's a lesson for all of us that our challenges are really just opportunities."

The `Runners are back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 when they travel to Cal Poly for a 7:00 p.m. dual. Bakersfield will then host the 2nd Annual Feud on the Field, Sunday, Feb. 16, against #5 Arizona State on the Main Soccer Field at noon.

CSUB captured last season's Feud on the Field by upsetting a ranked opponent, when they knocked off #25 Fresno State, 18-12.
