Martinez Flaunts Power as CSUB Wraps Opening Week

LOS ANGELES – The CSU Bakersfield softball team wrapped up the opening week of the 2020 season with another pair of games on Saturday. The Roadrunners rallied against No. 4 UCLA before falling to the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament host Bruins as well as Cal Poly at Easton Field.

On the day, junior college transfer Samantha Martinez flashed a powerful bat, hitting a two-run home run in each of Bakersfield's games. Martinez, who hails from Wasco, Calif., finished the day going 5-for-6 from the plate with four RBI and she has a team-high .455 batting average on the season. Senior Cydney Curran was the other offensive leader for CSUB as the Hawaiian shortstop went 6-for-16 (.400) in Los Angeles this week.

CSUB 4, No. 4 UCLA 8

The `Runners started their first game of the day with a good opportunity when Curran and Martinez each tallied singles. CSUB was unable to move the `Runners over and the Bruins went to work. A passed ball and an error by the `Runners proved costly in bottom half of the first inning as UCLA capitalized on the miscues for a 3-0 lead. Senior Daryn Hitzel retired the Bruins in order in the second inning, but UCLA added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-0 lead.

Unfazed by the slow start, CSUB continued to grind and set up a scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth. With two `Runners in scoring position and two outs, junior Ariana Acedo came up clutch, driving in Karah Wiseman and Nakaila Fuggs with a single to left field. The next inning, College of the Sequoias transfer Martinez came up clutch, hitting a two-out, two-RBI home run to make the score 5-4. Prior to this game, UCLA posted a 3-0 record while outscoring its opponents 26-0.

The Bruins retaliated in the bottom half of the fifth inning, extending its lead to 8-4 on a three-run homer from cleanup hitter Maya Brady. UCLA put two more runners on base in the frame, but freshman Talia Nielsen, relieving for Hitzel, got the `Runners out of the jam.

Nielsen kept UCLA off the scoreboard in the fourth and sixth innings, sending CSUB to its final three outs with a four-run deficit. Freshman Baylee Garrett drew a walk in the top of the seventh and nearly scored on a close play at the plate later in the frame, but the `Runners were unable to rally again and fell to the defending National Champions, 8-4.

On the game, Martinez was a perfect 4-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and four assists at second base. Acedo finished 2-for-3 with two RBI of her own against UCLA. Hitzel (0-3) took the loss after giving up two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work while Nielsen pitched the final 3.2 innings, allowing just three runs on four hits to the Bruins.

CSUB 3, Cal Poly 11 (5 inn.)

Picking up right where she left off, Martinez opened Bakersfield's second game with her second, two-run home run of the day. CSUB's first lead of the season did not last long as Cal Poly scored five runs in the first inning and four runs in the second to take a 9-2 lead.

Bakersfield capitalized on a Cal Poly error in the top of the third inning as Wiseman came around to score her second run of the day on the miscue. Nielsen kept the Mustangs quiet in the third and fourth innings, but Cal Poly scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to walk off with an 11-3 victory.

Next Week

CSUB (0-5) has wrapped up its time at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament and will return to Bakersfield to begin preparations for its next competition. The `Runners are headed to Stockton, Calif., Feb. 15-16, for the Libby Matson Tournament. CSUB will play two games each day with contests lined up against CSUN, Nevada, and host Pacific.
