`Runners Drop Two Games to Open Pacific's Tourney

STOCKTON, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield softball team kicked off the Libby Matson Tournament on Saturday with a pair of games. The Roadrunners struggled on offense and suffered losses against CSUN and Pacific.

CSUB 0, CSUN 9

CSUN jumped out to a big lead in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs in the frame. The Matadors tacked on one more run in the fourth, but freshman pitcher Talia Nielsen kept CSUN quiet for the next two innings.

In the top of the seventh, CSUN added three more runs to the scoreboard and finished off the shutout with a 9-0 victory. Bakersfield's lone hit of the game came from right fielder Ally Miller. Two other `Runners, Candace Haliburton and Samantha Pech, both recorded walks in the game.

Senior Daryn Hitzel (0-5) took the loss against CSUN after giving up five runs on six hits.

CSUB 1, Pacific 6

The `Runners got off to a quick start, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Cydney Curran drew a walk and promptly moved to second base on a sacrifice. Pech, the designated player, came to the plate with two outs and hit a dribbler up the middle that proved to be enough to let the speedy Curran wheel around and score.

Nielsen started Game 2 on Saturday and held off the Tigers for the first three innings. Pacific, the Libby Matson Tournament host, finally broke through to score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings. CSUB put several `Runners on base over the final few innings, but Bakersfield was unable to capitalize on its opportunities and fell, 6-1.

Four `Runners tallied hits against Pacific including a pinch hit single from freshman Baylee Garrett. Nielsen (0-2) took the loss after tossing 5.1 innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out three Tigers.
