CSUB Bats Get Going on Day 2 of UCLA Tourney

LOS ANGELES – The CSU Bakersfield softball team returned to Easton Field for Day 2 of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Friday. The Roadrunners outhit their opponents 13-11 on the day, but CSUB was only able to score one run while falling to San Diego and Pittsburgh.

After Friday's games, Crissy Buck-Ziegler, Head Coach of the `Runners, said she felt her squad improved at the plate: "We did a better job of making adjustments. I think we could have got out of the 4th against Pittsburgh, but we have to step up and do our jobs."

Senior Cydney Curran led the `Runners on the day, going 4-for-7 from the plate. Four other `Runners tallied two hits each during Friday's games including centerfielder Candace Halliburton, who added two outfield assists on the defensive end.

CSUB 0, San Diego 6

San Diego struck first, putting a run on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. After a double put a Torero in scoring position, a fielding error helped USD take a 1-0 lead early on. Karah Wiseman tallied a two-out triple in the bottom half of second inning. The `Runners could not bring her home in what would turn out to be the best scoring opportunity of the game for CSUB.

USD tacked on a run in the fourth inning before doubling its lead with a two-run homer in the sixth. The Toreros added another pair of runs in the seventh inning and shut the `Runners down to seal the 6-0  victory.

Senior shortstop Cydney Curran put together a 3-for-3 performance with a double, a stolen base, and four assists on defense. Freshman Talia Nielsen made her first start in the circle and took a complete-game loss after allowing four earned runs. The right-handed pitcher gave up just two walks while striking out one Torero.

CSUB 1, Pittsburgh 5

With two Panthers in scoring position in the bottom of the first inning, Pitt hit a single that looked as if it would score a pair of runs. Haliburton had other thoughts and gunned down the second Panther at home plate to limit the damage to just one run with her first assist of the game.

Senior pitcher Daryn Hitzel worked her way out of a two-out jam in the third inning before the lefty found herself with a two-out, bases loaded jam in the fourth. This time around, two fielding errors prolonged the inning and Pitt went on to score four unearned runs in the frame, taking a 5-0 lead.

Down to their final three outs, the `Runners managed to put their first run of the season on the scoreboard. Sam Fontaine, who went 2-for-3 on the game, singled and wound up scoring on an RBI fielder's choice by Ally Miller. Haliburton continued the rally with her second hit of the game, but the `Runners fell short as CSUB dropped a 5-1 decision to Pitt. Hitzel (0-2) took a tough loss after pitching a complete game, allowing just one earned run, and striking out five Panthers.

Tomorrow

CSUB (0-3) will close out the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on Saturday with a final pair of games. The `Runners will get a rematch with No. 4 UCLA at 2 p.m. before closing Opening Week against Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
