`Runners Down Santa Clara to Close Busy Day on Sand

IRVINE, Calif. – A busy day in Southern California resulted in a pair of wins and one loss for the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team. The Roadrunners defeated Irvine Valley College in an exhibition before dropping a tight match against Concordia Irvine on Friday. CSUB rebounded to finish out the day with a victory over Santa Clara to improve to 5-1 on the season.

"Today was an overall good day for us," said Cesar Benatti, Head Coach of the `Runners. "All the teams were really balanced and the results were as tight as they could be. We did a good job the first match against IVC, exploring our strengths well. Concordia held us well in key matches and we lost a match that could have gone either way. We changed our mindset for the last match versus Santa Clara and played our best game of the day, competing consistently. I'm very satisfied and excited for next weekend."

CSUB 3, IVC 2 (Exhib.)

Bakersfield's No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 pairs all earned wins against Irvine Valley College. The top performing pair of the match was Emily Hansen and Hana Makonova, a junior and sophomore duo that breezed past the Lasers with a 21-10, 21-5 victory.

CSUB 2, Concordia Irvine 3

The `Runners and Eagles split the No. 2/4 matches with Hansen and Makonova gritting out their second victory of the day, 21-18 and 25-23. Senior Rafa Bonifacio and junior Brooke Boiseau claimed a convincing victory at the No. 3 pair, but CUI stole the other two matches to hand CSUB its first loss of the season.

CSUB 4, Santa Clara 1

Bakersfield got back on track with a solid win over Santa Clara. Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat returned to form, winning the No. 1 pairing handily while Hansen and Makonova dominated the No. 2 matchup. Benatti swapped his 4's and 5's while both pairs' matches went down to the wire. Hayley McCluskey and Hannah Manzanares picked up a win with a solid finish in the third set, 15-9.

Next Weekend

The `Runners (5-1) will not have to wait long for a rematch with Santa Clara. Next weekend, CSUB will tackle the Big West/West Coast Challenge in Santa Cruz, Calif., with three matches against WCC teams on Mar. 7. Bakersfield will face off against Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, and San Francisco in a busy day on the sand.
