CSUB Improves to 4-0 in the Sand

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team took down the Vanguard Lions in a pair of matches on Saturday to remain undefeated on the young season. The Roadrunners improved to 4-0 on the year after another pair of 5-0 sweeps at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.

"Today was another great day for us," said Cesar Benatti, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We executed the game plan really well in the first match and took care of business. For the second match, Vanguard made a few changes that worked well, but even then we managed to play great and we ended up winning with good performances. We're super happy to have all the pairs winning all their games, which gives us confidence going into the next matches."

CSUB 5, Vanguard 0

Playing in the sand together for the first time, senior Hannah Manzanares and sophomore Hayley McCluskey coasted to a 21-10, 21-13 victory over Vanguard, setting the tone for the `Runners early on. Another new pairing in Brooke Boiseau and Rafa Bonifacio dominated the No. 3 pairing for a 21-9, 21-14 victory as CSUB breezed to a 5-0 sweep of the Lions while not dropping a single set.

CSUB 5, Vanguard 0

Vanguard switched around some of its pairings for the rematch and the No. 1 pair of Lions pushed CSUB's Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat, but the `Runners held on for a three-set victory. Sophomore Hana Makonova and junior Emily Hansen coasted to a victory, 21-10 and 21-15, in the No. 3 matchup while a new pair of `Runners solidified the No. 5 point. Redshirt freshman Ericka Snopko and mid-year transfer Caroline Benke both made their `Runner debuts and won in three sets against the Lions. Hannah Manzanares and Hayley McCluskey played well in boht matches, allowing their opponents an average of just 12 points per set in four sets won.

Next Weekend

The `Runners improved to 4-0 on the year with a great start during opening weekend. On Friday, Feb. 28, CSUB will return to the sand for three matches during a busy day in Irvine, Calif.
