Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Allen's Career-High Not Enough in Road Loss at UVU

OREM, Utah – Despite a career-high scoring effort from junior guard Cam Allen, the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team was unable to overcome a lackluster second half on the road against Utah Valley. The host Wolverines slowly added to their lead over the final 20 minutes and closed out a 72-58 victory over the Roadrunners.

"We weren't very good all night, not just the second half," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We're not playing very hard right now. That's why I played Jack Schoemann and Ronne Readus more tonight. I thought those guys were trying to play hard for us…We just have to do a better job. We have to move on to the next game. Our players have to step up."

Bakersfield jumped out to an 11-4 lead early on the road, but the host Wolverines responded with a 13-0 run to take a four-point lead nearly halfway through the first period. The `Runners worked their way to a 19-19 tie with seven minutes left in the first half, but UVU responded with another run to go ahead by five points.

CSUB pulled within two points on a Czar Perry pull-up jumper, but the Wolverines responded with a 7-0 run down the stretch to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room. UVU used an advantage in three-point shooting (20% vs. 67%) and a large disparity at the free throw line to gain its first-half lead. The Wolverines hit 13-of-17 free throws while the `Runners shot just six and made four.

Allen led all student-athletes in the first half with 10 points. Greg Lee, a junior forward, added eight points while Shawn Stith pounded the paint while racking up four points and five rebounds.

Bakersfield was able to pull within four points, 43-47, early in the second half, but CSUB did not get closer than that. UVU trickled points in slowly, adding to its lead down the stretch and gradually pulling away for a 14-point victory, 72-58.

Allen, who hails from Greenville, S.C., tallied a career-high 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting and 4-of-5 from three-point range. The guard raised his previous best of 22 points, posted two weeks ago against California Baptist. Lee finished with nine points, while Schoemann chipped in four points and five rebounds in 15 second-half minutes.

CSUB (11-16, 5-7 WAC) will close out this week's road trip with one more game on Saturday. The `Runners are set to face off against the Seattle U Redhawks before returning to the comforts of the Icardo Center. Tipoff on Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Seattle.
