CSUB Bats Come Alive to Close Tournament with Win

STOCKTON, Calif. – All of the hard work paid off for the CSU Bakersfield softball team Sunday afternoon as the Roadrunners closed out the Libby Matson Tournament with a victory. CSUB started the day with improvement but another loss against CSUN before putting it all together in an 8-3 victory against Nevada.

CSUB 2, CSUN 6

Just as it did in Saturday's game, CSUN got out to a strong start on Sunday, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Bakersfield put two `Runners in scoring position in the top of the second, but CSUB was unable to drive them home and continued to trail. CSUN added to its lead with a three-run third inning.

Bakersfield broke through in the top of the fifth. Candace Haliburton's bunt single scored Karah Wiseman before Samantha Martinez drove in Ally Miller with an RBI double, making the score 4-2. The Matadors tacked on two more runs in the sixth frame and closed out the seventh for a 6-2 victory.

CSUB tallied five hits and two walks in the game, but the `Runners were mostly unable to string those together in the loss. Talia Nielsen pitched well in relief of junior Daryn Hitzel as the freshman tossed 3.2 innings, striking out two Matadors and allowing two unearned runs.

CSUB 8, Nevada 3

The `Runners capitalized on a first-inning error by the Wolf Pack as Haliburton came around to score on the miscue. Nevada answered right back with a run of its own in the bottom of the first, but Hitzel, who started both games on Sunday, kept her opponents quiet over the next two innings.

Bakersfield rolled its momentum into the second frame, plating a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead. Laila Arditto came around to score on Miller's RBI single before the latter scored on another Nevada error. Both teams would stay quiet until the fifth inning with Hitzel and Nielsen pitching effectively.

The `Runners tacked on two more runs in the top half of the fifth. After a lead-off double from Haliburton, Martinez tallied her second RBI base hit of the day, this time plating pinch runner Arianna Felix with the second double of the inning. Samantha Pech followed that up with an RBI single that scored second baseman Martinez and extended Bakersfield's lead to 5-2.

A `Runner error in the bottom half of the fifth helped prolong the frame as Nevada wound up scoring two runs and cutting its deficit to just one run. After Nielsen quieted the Pack, CSUB went to work in the top of the seventh, scoring three more times.

Senior Cydney Curran drove in Haliburton on an RBI single to get the big inning started. With Curran and Martinez in scoring position, senior Jocelyn Betancourt tallied a single to cap the three-run inning and put CSUB ahead 8-3. Nielsen, who hails from Bakersfield, Calif., came back out and closed out her first collegiate win with a 1-2-3 inning.

Hitzel pitched three solid innings, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out four batters. Nielsen (1-2) picked up the win after throwing the final four innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run to the Wolf Pack.

At the plate, Bakersfield recorded eight hits from eight different `Runners while five drove in at least one run against Nevada. CSUB also used its speed to its advantage against the Wolf Pack, posting four stolen bases in the game. On the weekend, Bakersfield's designated player Pech finished with team-highs in batting average (.375) and on-base percentage (.500) while tying Martinez for a team-best two RBI.

Next Tournament

The `Runners (1-8) will take the next two weeks to prepare and progress with their next tournament slated for Mar. 6-8. CSUB will head south to Riverside, Calif. for the Amy S. Harrison Classic, hosted by UC Riverside. Five games over three days will make for a busy weekend for Bakersfield as the `Runners are set to face off against Southern Utah, UC Riverside, and Michigan State.
