Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runners Battle But Fall To Stanford On The Road

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – A hard fight raged in the Kaiser Permanente Arena Monday night between the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team and the Pac-12's Stanford. While the Roadrunners' physical defense helped CSUB (3-3) continue to threaten Stanford (5-2), the host Cardinal held off Bakersfield's advances as CSUB fell on the road, 63-50.

Bakersfield's sturdy defense forced Stanford to commit 21 turnovers, the second-most of the season for the Cardinal. The `Runners also limited their host in shooting from behind the arc (.167) while nailing 35 percent of their own three-pointers.

Redshirt senior De'Monte Buckingham posted 10 points, nine rebounds, and three steals for Bakersfield in a well-rounded game. Buckingham joined another pair of `Runners in tallying double-digit points on Monday night including Justin Edler-Davis' team-high 13 points. Fellow senior Taze Moore chipped in 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks against Stanford.

First Half

A three-pointer made by Travis Henson at 13:30 gave the `Runners a 5-4 lead in a defensive first half.  The two teams traded baskets up until Stanford led 12-14, when the Cardinal slowly wormed away, building up an 11-point lead over the next eight minutes. CSUB's defense prevented Stanford from running away in the period and Bakersfield went into the locker room trailing 22-30.

Bakersfield forced 11 Stanford turnovers in the first 20 minutes, creating havoc in the passing lanes for its host. One of the stronger rebounding teams in the country, Bakersfield struggled to keep Stanford off the boards, as the `Runners held a 29-12 disadvantage in rebounding at the break. A native of San Diego, Edler-Davis led the `Runner offense in the first half, knocking down a trio of three-pointers on his way to 11 points.

Second Half

Stanford momentarily opened its lead to as many as 12 points at 39-27, but the `Runners continued to fight their host. CSUB pulled within seven points on multiple occasions, not giving Stanford a chance to pull away. The Cardinal took their biggest lead of the game at 57-42 with just under six minutes remaining and CSUB could not close the gap, eventually falling, 63-50.

Buckingham, a Richmond transfer two years ago, tallied 10 points and eight rebounds in the second half alone. Moore scored eight of his eleven points in the second period with the pair giving Bakersfield most of its offensive spark.

CSUB wrapped up the game with a rebounding deficit, 34-41, for just the second time this season. The `Runners went 10-for-16 from the free throw line, facing a big disadvantage compared to Stanford's 21-for-34 performance. CSUB's bench outscored Stanford's, 21-7, and the two teams finished the night almost even in turnovers, assists, and steals.

Next Game

Finishing out a stretch with three games over five days, Bakersfield will have another quick turnaround before its next game. The `Runners are headed to Malibu, Calif. for their Dec. 23 matchup with Pepperdine (4-4). Tipoff on Wednesday is scheduled for 3 p.m. from the Firestone Fieldhouse with the game set to be live streamed on the WCC Network.
