Men's Basketball to Open 2020-21 Season This Week

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The long-awaited start of the 2020-21 season has finally arrived for the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball season. At this time, the Roadrunners are announcing their first two games on the schedule, a road game to start the year followed by their home opener next week, with more non-conference games to be announced in the future.

Bakersfield's season is scheduled to get underway on Wednesday, Dec. 2, when Santa Clara (3-0) plays host to CSUB in the first meeting between the two squads since 2013. Final details of the location and time of this game will be announced soon.

CSUB and Santa Clara will clash in what will be the season opener for the `Runners and the fourth game of the year for the undefeated Broncos. Santa Clara brings the experience and momentum of last week's wins over Idaho State, UC Davis, and Nicholls State into Wednesday's contest.

The `Runners also anxiously await their home opener, currently set for Monday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. (PT).

CSUB is preparing to host a non-Division I opponent in Bethesda University, which will serve as a great tune-up opportunity in the early season for Bakersfield's head coach, Rod Barnes, and his squad. Bakersfield hosted the Anaheim, Calif.-based team once before, during the 2016-17 season, as the `Runners earned a convincing victory over Bethesda.

Barnes is preparing his 2020-21 squad for an unprecedented year and the `Runners will do their best to drown out the noise around them. Intense focus will be required for CSUB to take on its challenge of competing in the Big West Conference for the first time.

Fans can return to GoRunners.com on Tuesday for an in-depth interview with Coach Barnes regarding his thoughts on the year ahead as well as a breakdown of his roster. Follow @CSUB_MBB on Twitter (link above) for the most up-to-date information, but keep in mind that the always-fluid nature of the COVID-19 pandemic means the basketball schedule is tentative and subject to change.
