Wrestlers Host Duke in Return to Dual Format



Bakersfield, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield Wrestling team is set to entertain Duke University in a non-conference match-up at the Icardo Center on Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. The Roadrunners are 1-3 this season in dual meet competition and will wrestle in the head-to-head format for the first time since edging Buffalo 16-15 on Nov. 22. The historically strong Blue Devils find themselves in an unfamiliar position as they carry an 0-7 mark into their trip to California. Duke will compete at Fresno State on Friday, before making their way down to Bakersfield on Sunday.
 
"We're excited to be back home in the Icardo Center where we wrestle well and to welcome a prestigious program like Duke to our campus," said Head Coach Manny Rivera. "We dropped a match to Duke two years ago and we'd like to get that one back this weekend."
 
The `Runners have competed primarily in tournament competition for the last two months. They hosted they Roadrunner Open in November, before sending invitees to two of the most competitive events in college wrestling in the Cliff Keen Invitational and the Southern Scuffle.
 
Duke last competed at the Virginia Duals where they dropped three straight contests and were forced to forfeit three weight classes in each dual for various reasons. The Blue Devils lost their three matchups in Virginia by a combined score of 145-6 and have yet to win multiple bouts in a single dual this season.
 
"There is always an urgency to dual meets, and we'll have to make that adjustment," Rivera said. "We always want our athletes to wrestle aggressively and put pressure on our opponents. That is especially important in dual meets where every individual point is so important to the team score."
 
The aggressive wrestling of Russell Rohlfing and Angelo Martinoni highlighted the `Runners trips to in season tournament competition.
 
Rohlfing posted three victories in each of the Cliff Keen and the Southern Scuffle, advancing deep into the brackets at both events. He is now 12-7 on the season and enters this weekend's action ranked #29 by Track Wrestling at 149 lbs. Rohlfing's 12 victories give him 75 for his career putting him in a tie for 41st all-time on the CSUB career wins list.
 
Martinoni was one of four Bakersfield wrestlers to win at least three matches at the Southern Scuffle. He returned to the mat after missing two months due to injury and reeled off five straight wins to reach the tournaments quarterfinals before posting an eventual sixth-place finish in the tournament. Rohlfing, Jacob Thalin and Jarrod Snyder also posted a three victories at the event.
 
Redshirt freshman Chance Rich posted a pair of wins at the Scuffle, highlighted by his third pin of the season when he stuck Cleveland State's Cameron Latham in 6:34. He joins Rohlfing as the only other `Runner ranked in the top-33 in his weight class by Track Wrestling. Rich is #28 in the 133 lb division.
 
Rich, Rohlfing and Dominic Ducharme lead the `Runners with two victories a piece in dual meet competition this season.  
 
Duke, meanwhile, is led by redshirt freshman Mason Eaglin at 174 lb who ranks #30 in the weight class. Eaglin is 14-6 on the season and has three of the teams four individual dual victories. He recently ran the bracket to take the 174 lb title at the Keystone Invitational.
 
Duke's Wade Unger sits second on the Blue Devils with nine overall wins in the 149 lb class but is just 1-4 in dual matches this season.
 
The two teams are meeting for just the second time. Duke bested CSUB 27-18, almost two years to the date, in a neutral site dual at Northern Colorado. Rohlfing and Ducharme each posted individual victories in the meet for the `Runners. No current Blue Devils were active for the 2018 dual.
