CSUB Falls Short in Closing Battles of Fresno Invite

FRESNO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team played a pair of matches to close out the Fresno State Invitational on Friday. The Roadrunners put up good fights in both battles, but fell by identical scores to Santa Clara and CSUN at the Save Mart Center.

CSUB 0, Santa Clara 3

Santa Clara came into Friday afternoon's match undefeated with wins in their first five matches of the season. Undaunted by an intimidating foe, CSUB put together a strong first set against the Broncos. From a 17-17 tie, Santa Clara used a short sprint to pull ahead 20-18. The `Runners battled to stay in the game, but the Broncos claimed the opening set 25-22.

Set 2 started out close, but Santa Clara ran away with it in the middle of the frame. The Broncos moved to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 win.
Similar to the first set, the two teams were locked up for the first part of Set 3. From a 10-10 tie, a 5-1 Bronco run gave Santa Clara all of the room it needed. The `Runners made a late push, but Santa Clara closed out the match with a 25-18 win.

Junior Emily Hansen led all `Runners with nine kills on a .269 hitting percentage in Friday's first match. Senior setter Sidney Wicks chipped in 16 assists and five digs while sophomore Hayley McCluskey added seven kills. Santa Clara looked to Julia Sangiacomo's 17 kills to provide most of the offensive punch.

CSUB 0, CSUN 3

CSUB and CSUN played a tight first set, but CSUN put together a late spurt to gain some breathing room. The Matadors eventually finished off a 25-20 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau and senior Rafa Bonifacio each had three kills in the opening frame.

In Set 2, the `Runners found themselves down late in the game, 16-19. Bakersfield never let down, pushing the scored to 23-24 on a kill from Hansen, but CSUN held on for a 25-23 victory as the Matadors took a 2-0 advantage to Set 3.

From a 16-16 tie in the third set, the Matadors went on a 6-1 run to open up some breathing room on the `Runners. Bakersfield responded with back-to-back points late in the game, but CSUN finished the match with a 25-18 win.

Hansen, a native of Bakersfield, added eight kills, three digs, and two blocks against CSUN. Boiseau was the CSUB leader in Friday's second match, tallying nine kills. Wicks played well again, recording 22 assists to go with two kills and six digs.
