Bakersfield Drops 2-1 Decision at UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The Roadrunner men's soccer team opened its week with the first of two matches on Friday evening. CSU Bakersfield put up a good fight on the road against an undefeated UC Davis squad, but the host Aggies pulled out a 2-1 victory over the `Runners.

The two teams tested each other lightly in the opening 20 minutes with neither team making a strong advance into the final third. Around 37 minutes into the match, UC Davis corralled a loose ball in the box, but the `Runner defense collapsed on the shooter and his shot went high and wide as the scoreboard remained blank.

The final five minutes of the first half proved to be wild as the Aggies opened the scoring on a penalty kick goal at 40:05. The `Runners only needed 38 seconds to find their equalizer. Justin Markus marched the ball down the sideline and drove right at the Davis keeper. The sophomore's toe punch sent the ball straight to the head of freshman Alexis Rivas and the Bakersfield native (South HS) nodded home a point-blank goal to tie the match at 1-1.

Less than three minutes into the second half, CSUB made a mental mistake on a goal kick, turning the ball over to Davis in a dangerous area. Wumi Aladetimi stole the ball and beat Bakersfield's netminder, Rodrigo Sarmiento, in a 1v1 situation to put the Aggies ahead, 2-1.

The `Runners relentlessly searched for another equalizer and saw their best chance come late in the second half. With three and a half minutes left on the clock, Niall Owens found a ball at his feet in the middle of the box. A one-time, sweeping shot to the outside corner of the goal just barely went wide and CSUB's time started ticking more quickly. UC Davis held on for the one-goal victory at home.

Bakersfield (0-3) will stay in Northern California to prepare for its final match of the weekend. The `Runners are set to square off against Sacramento State on Sunday, an undefeated squad that just knocked off fellow Western Athletic Conference foe Air Force earlier this evening. Kick off in the state capitol is set for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
