Men's Soccer Opens Conference First for Soccers

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the second-straight season CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer team will open Western Athletic Conference action with San Jose State on Saturday night. It'll be the Spartans league home opener as the Roadrunners kick off conference on the road.

Bakersfield enters WAC play with a 1-5 record, while the Spartans check in at 0-7. CSUB started the 2019 season off with a three-game skid, picked up a win at Sacramento State, then dropped their next two matches.

"We are prepared and excited for the conference matches to begin," explained head coach Richie Grant. "Out schedile to this point has helped ready us and it's encouraging to see how well the WAC is performing at the national level."

The Roadrunners are used to injecting five or six newcomers into their starting lineup. It'll be important for Grant and company to adjust and have cohesiveness in conference.

San Jose State leads the all-time series 10-7-1, but the Spartans just barely hold the edge at home with a 4-3-1 edge. The last time CSUB was in San Jose, Calif. a one goal shutout slipped past the `Runners as the Spartans started the 2017 league slate with three points. Last season the Roadrunners dropped a 2-1 decision at Main Soccer Field.

The Spartans are led by senior Suliman Khorami who has two goals for a total of four points. Niklas Korber leads CSUB in scoring with four goals this season for a total of nine points on the year.
