CSUB Ready to Host Roadrunner Classic This Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Three-straight road tournaments proved to be a good, early test for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team, but the Roadrunners have finally returned home and are preparing to host their own tournament. CSUB will welcome San Francisco, UC Davis, and Fresno State to the Icardo Center, Sept. 20-21, for the Roadrunner Classic.

"We are excited to finally play at home in front of our fans," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "We have three great teams coming to our place. It will be a very competitive tournament."

The `Runners are preparing to host six matches over two days with CSUB kicking off the Classic against San Francisco on Friday morning at 11 a.m. Day 2 will feature the final four matches, including CSUB's clash with UC Davis at 10 a.m. and rematch with Fresno State at 7 p.m. For the whole tournament schedule, visit the CSUB volleyball schedule page.

Bakersfield (3-6) is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Farmers State Bank Invitational in Missoula, Mont. The `Runners opened the tournament with a come-from-behind win over UTEP before sweeping host Montana. CSUB's only loss of the weekend came against Montana State. Outside hitter Hayley McCluskey was the driving force last week and the sophomore's 3.5 kills per set earned McCluskey All-Tournament honors.

San Francisco (4-4) is coming off a 1-1 finish at its own Bay Area Invitational, defeating Utah State 3-0 but falling to Brown 3-1. Outside hitter Kathya Garcia is the go-to offensive weapon for the Dons as the senior averages 3.88 kills per set.

UC Davis (6-4) started the season hot but has since gone 1-2 at its last two tournaments. Those four losses came against strong competition with the Aggies falling at the hands of No. 19 Utah, Iowa, Utah Valley, and South Dakota. Davis' sophomore setter, Jane Seslar, conducts the offense to the tune of 10.15 assists per set.

Fresno State owns a 5-4 record on the season after posting a 1-2 finish at the Lumberjack Classic last weekend. The week prior, the Bulldogs suffered a loss at home when Bakersfield took a 3-1 victory at the Fresno State Invitational. Former `Runner Desireé Sukhov fuels the Bulldogs with her team-high 4.36 kills per set.
