Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Roadrunners Start 2019 Season with 2-1 Road Win

STOCKTON, Calif. – One game into the 2019 season and it's apparent that this CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team is different from past rosters. For the first time in four seasons the Roadrunners opened their schedule with a 2-1 victory after taking down Pacific on the road. We're young," said head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "At times, we had nine freshmen or nine newcomers but yet the depth of our team showed. We were able to rotate and did well in those rotations."

"We were 0-3 last year before our first win," added Vecchio. "Now a year later we're 1-0. Not only did the growth of our returners show but the direction of where this program is going did too."

"Now we have to make the team understand it's one game," explained Vecchio. "We haven't accomplished anything. We have to get back to work tomorrow because we have a tough test ahead of us on Sunday. Enjoy tonight, but we have to keep grinding."

Bakersfield scored its first tally of the contest in the first half. Redshirt senior Aryana Harvey freed up Eszter Toth with a pass that the junior striker sent passed the Tiger's goalkeeper. It was her fourth career goal. The Roadrunner defense held the home team scoreless through the first period.

CSUB added an insurance goal when freshmen Jaden Skinner scored her first career goal in the second half. Although the defense held the Tigers scoreless for quite some time, Pacific cut the deficit in half after sophomore Isabella Pariente squeaked a shot at goal past transfer junior keeper Andrea Neves who had had a perfect night up until.

"We finished the match with five freshmen on the field," added Vecchio. "We're going to have growing pains but that comes with having young players. Tonight just confirmed what we knew coming in. We have talent but we're young and have to grow as the season goes on."

"It's always great to start the season winning," said Vecchio. "This was a great team win. Winning on the road is difficult. We had newcomers and returners step up tonight to make this win happen."
